Best wishes to Mike. Mrs. Smith is from our part of PA, so it turns out we're running the obit and I'm editing the page. One of those makes-it-hit-home-a-little-more type things.

If anyone cares, they're requesting donations be sent to Hospice of Memorial Hospital, Martinsville. I can dig up the exact address if anyone wants it.

Dig, please. Not necessarily because I want it, but just to get it out there.

Report on Jayski: The owner of Ginn Resorts has not only bought a piece of MB2 Motorsports (as reported by Speed Channel last week) but has bought out the 80% stake formerly held by team founder Nelson Bowers, with the official announcement coming during Brickyard week.

And by "overseeing" Erin Crocker, they mean ... ;)

I'm not saying anything. I didn't say anything then, and I'm not saying anything now.

Erin Crocker is a cute redhead. Not hot, but very cute. I would consider breaking my anti-redhead policy for her, but I'm sure she's already nailing some grease monkey in the garage.

    Uh, not even close.

And there are a lot more college educated engineers in the garage these days than grease monkeys.

I'm a redhead, and even though we redheads tend to steer clear of each other, I think she's cute.

Completely off subject here, but I've been thinking about this and I don't think it warrants its own thread. Anyway ...

Had a conversation the other day with Ward Burton. Exceptionally nice guy, as most will agree (I needed a translator for most of it, but I'm not holding that against him), and rather humble to boot.

He never came out and bitched and moaned about his situation, although I've noticed a few comments he's made about it. But Burton's whole ordeal strikes me as rather odd. I mean, I know there was a lot of shit that went down when he was fired and all, but still, here's a guy who won the Daytona 500 a few years ago, was a pretty consistent driver whenever he was given a halfway decent ride and, from what I've always seen, a respected guy around the garage.

But he can't get a gig for three years. And in the meantime, every team out there is running around snatching up 14-year-old drivers and signing em to money deals and passing out multi-million dollar contracts to unproven, or worse, proven-to-be-not-so-great drivers.

I just don't get it. Is there some behind-the-scenes, super-secret incident that I missed or something?

I don't know if it's so much that he can't get a gig -- I'd imagine he would have been in front of Kvapil, Wimmer and Pug Jr. if he wanted any of the rides those guys got -- but that he wants a really good gig, and he's willing to bide his time.

Wasn't there talk of him climbing into a Red Bull car if Elliott didn't unretire?
