Yeah, it's super top secret right now (which is kinda thwarted by Burton's numerous interviews of late), but he's making a return in 07.

And I didn't get that from our conversation -- that he was holding out. In fact, he said something along the lines of: "I couldn't get anybody to even look at me."

You'd obviously know better than I. What I wrote basically was the impression I got from listening to Wahd Buhtin when he was on Despain's show a few weeks ago.

I love this from Ward's web site:
Ward is currently exploring his options for the future; any news of a decision regarding his racing future will be posted here immediately.

I have to be very careful about how I say this.

But I've been wondering this for a long time. -- This -- has been known in the garage area for some time. Why hasn't anyone written about -- this -- ? I think I heard about it in April, and people were saying it was a few weeks old then.

I don't want this thread to get deleted, so I'm trying to be cautious. But can someone speak in general terms about -- this -- ? Many of you know what I'm talking about as evidenced by recent posts.

You can't lose a libel suit if you write the truth, right?

Isn't the subject of this discussion married? At least I thought he was hitched. Maybe not.

Tread carefully. Heh heh. Tread. Auto thread. Tread.

Seriously, don't just toss shit around here.

Mary Evernham filed divorce papers in April. They'd been separated since before the end of last season.

Hmmm. Perhaps some enterprising reporter should give Mrs. Evernham a call.

OK, so is this a story?

Suppose what has been said on here -- I intentionally whiffed on the point, since I didn't want to be the first one to bring it up in a public forum, despite what I'd heard privately -- is true. Driver sleeping with owner.

Talking about the head of a pretty damn big stock car racing operation schtupping the help? How does this affect his operation? Plenty of people with skeletons in that garage; plenty of people willing to share others.

    Discuss.

The reporter who broke open that can of whoopass likely would get frozen out of the garage for a long time, methinks.

    I agree with wicked.

Topic: How do you write a feature on either Ray Evernham or Erin Crocker without writing about this? Rather like trying to ignore the 400-pound gorilla in the living room, methinks.

Topic 2: Beat writers in baseball, football, basketball &c. don't spend their time obsessing over who players, owners and coaches are screwing1. Ty Votaw, the former commissioner of the LPGA, was banging one of his organization's members for much of the time he was in charge (and later married her), which did generate some news coverage. Where is the line here?

1With the exception of the New York tabs.

Topic response: How would you go about nonchalantly dropping in the Ray-Erin connection? I don't see it as necessary unless the feature is on their lives outside of the track.

Topic 2: Beat writers do hear the juicy news about who's screwing who and such gossip, however, it's usually just kept inside the press rooms, among writers at the bar and in the NY gossip columns.
