    From numbers I've seen, Earnhardt Sr. outsells Johnson and Dale hasn't driven in five years...

    This was something I'd like to hear more about...I wasn't covering the sport yet the year Marlin got hurt. McMurray won too quick so it meant the car was illegal?

    Bill Davis Racing hasn't won anything? Somehow, a couple wins in 2001 (including the Soudin' 500) and a Daytona 500 in 2002 come to mind. Going from the No. 3 or 4 Pontiac team to higher up on the Mopar pecking order helped. And Petty had won a few races in the late '90s, better than a good deal of teams in the garage at that point.

    You are right, I did miss Ganassi. I left Evernham's team off the list since it was a start-up operation that year (albeit with much of Bill Elliott's stuff).

    And how did McMurray's win mess with Ganassi winning? Are you trying to say ol' Chipper was on the traction-control bandwagon? Shocked, I tell you, shocked! Chip would never cheat. :D

    (McMurray's win also proved that the driver element is almost irrelevant in the sport nowadays.)

    At this point, almost any manufacturer has a shot to win in Busch, even Oldsmobile, Lincoln, Buick, AMC and Hudson, since factory (and to a lesser extent, sponsor) support is pretty lame.

    This is always one of my favorite weeks to be in Manhattan - Its NASCAR week when NASCAR comes home to its roots for a week long celebration culminating in a huge barbecue where it all began - The Waldorf Astoria.

    You know what would be a great innovation for SportsJournalists.com? Whoever starts the thread would have the power to delete worthless comments. Of course, if that was the case, Boom might have 10,000 fewer posts.

    Anyway, back to NASCAR talk. They've started playing that Citizen watch commercial again where they claim Michael Waltrip is "unstoppable." Every time I see it, I think, "Sure, except when he can't qualify for the races."

    Boom and I have clashed many a time, but I don't really see anything wrong with that last post. It actually makes a good point about the incongruity of the situation.

    Where do you expect NASCAR to hold its season-ending awards banquet? In a barn in Darlington?

    There are a lot of great southern cities where it makes more sense to hold NASCAR Dinner.

    Really what is the logic to having it in NYC?

    I didn't say I agreed with having the banquet in NYC, however, I can see some of the reasons why it was initially thought of as a smart idea: exposure to Wall Street for NASCAR and its sponsors, an earnest effort to cut the umbilical cord from the deep South and it's a "treat" for the winners to be wined and dined at the Waldorf.

    I agree, NYC isn't fitting, but where else would be more suitable? Las Vegas? Miami?

    Well, you certainly won't see anybody from modern NASCAR darkening the hallway of the Streamline Hotel in Daytona.

    Come to think of it, you won't see anybody outside of vagrants, druggies, dealers, hookers and the truly desperate there, either.

    Tahoe. I mean, if it takes us 15 minutes to get there, imagine how quick it'd be for a professional racer?
