NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Bobby Hamilton, the longtime NASCAR driver who won the 2001 Talladega 500 and was the 2004 Craftsman Truck Series champion, died Sunday of cancer, said Liz Allison, a family friend who co-hosted a radio show with Hamilton. He was 49. <cm-bd>¶
Hamilton was at home with his family when he died, Allison said. <cm-bd>¶
Hamilton was diagnosed with head and neck cancer in February. A malignant growth was found when swelling from dental surgery did not go down. <cm-bd>¶
He raced in the season’s first three events, with a best finish of 14th at Atlanta Motor Speedway, before turning over the wheel to his son, Bobby Hamilton Jr. The senior Hamilton then started chemotherapy and radiation treatment. <cm-bd>¶

    What?

    Damn.

That totally came out of left field.

Not really, wicked. He left the ride early last year, and wasn't around the track as much after that. The last time i talked to him, he didn't sound good, voice-wise.

Well, everyone had sounded so upbeat about his recovery.

He put the 43 in Victory Lane in Phoenix for its first win after Richard Petty's retirement, if I remember correctly.

    Sad news.

Indeed, JB, November 1995, IIRC, with Robbie Loomis as the crew chief.

Just saw IJAG's post. I stand corrected. Everything I'd heard was that he was on the right track, though.

    Either way, RIP.

They also said BP's cancer was in remission late in the year. Now he's in ICU (though it's apparently from damage from the chemo and radiation, not from actual cancer).

They always sound upbeat and then you're dead, which is why cancer fucking sucks.

    Re: Chase expansion

Why, why, why??? That is so stupid. They already had a great number -- 10.

Why would you mess with 10? DUMB. DUMB.

Anyway, Jay, that was a pretty funny post.

Of course, there's another thread more prominent on here, but Benny Parsons passed earlier today.

I'm really sad about Benny. I posted something about it on the other thread.

On another note: On the same Cold Pizza program that reported the news, the ESPN the Magazine editor was previewing the "Next" issue. She said they selected Juan Pablo Montoya because he's "won seven F1 titles in five years." Who knew?
