I get that complaint to a degree, but comic books are still a thing and they're maybe not as popular as they were in the early 90s but they're pretty much holding steady. If you have 500k core customers picking up your books at the local comic shop every week, and then 3 million start watching the movies, those 500k haven't diminished in any way even if they make up a smaller percentage of your business.

Comic conventions used to be a thing because that was the only chance you'd get to try to find and trade for the books. Mile High was one of the earliest to go national with mail-order of individual back issues. Now you can order anything you want on Ebay.

 

Yep, agree with most of what others here said about Wonder Woman, great movie except the ending. But damn, Gal was tremendous in the role, and I liked how they injected humor. Sad thing is, I think Justice League will suck, but WW will shine in it, like she did in B vs.S.

So, has anyone seen the new Spider-Man? And, if so, is it appropriate to take an almost-4-year-old to see?

My son has been obsessing about it. Figure it can't be that bad since they're plugging it on Disney Junior.

 

Squirrel Girl is usually drawn more as funny than sexy, but I can see Vayntrub in the role. I saw Worthy on a kids show my daughter used to watch. He was annoying, but so is Speedball.

 

This is an excellent question. My 5-year-old really wants to see it, though from the previews I'm wondering if Vulture is a little too mature for him. Violence in Spider Man movies is usually pretty tame, and he's seen the Star Wars trilogy (limbs getting cut off for days), so I think he can probably handle it, but I'd love to hear from some people who have seen it. Especially since I'm probably dying to see it more than him.

I don't think there's much in it that would get to kids. I wouldn't worry about taking my kids to it when they were little.

 

The main villains (Green Goblin, Doc Ock and New Goblin) got their shit fucked up pretty good in the Raimi movies (impaled by flying wings, metal spikes, etc etc) and Spidey/Tobey got the crap pounded out of him quite a bit too.

 

Meanwhile, across the Pond, the 13th Doctor will be revealed Sunday. The actual regeneration won't be until the Christmas special.

Based on the end of the last season I assume Bill is gone? It's an interesting choice of direction to start a new Doc with no carry over companion.....only been done once before in the new Who era IIRC

 

They've basically wiped the slate clean whenever they changed show runners, which is why they're doing it now. Moffatt is trying to tie up his loose ends and let Chris Chibnall start fresh.
The lack of a carry over companion, though, has actually been more common in New Who than I think it was in the Classic era. If you count Eight and the War Doctor, then it's four out of six Doctors in this era who have regenerated alone (Eight-War, War-Nine, 10-11, and 12-13). The Seven-Eight regeneration from the movie was also solo. I think most of the ones before that had a companion present.

And they certainly have been laying the groundwork for a female Doctor. Unless it's some timey-wimey stuff where it's Missy (maybe they make her the Valeyard and finally get that dangling plot thread cleaned up so people will shut up about it) and there's a story-based reason for it, it feels like they'd just be doing it for the sake of doing it. Stunt casting on an epic scale.
