Re: "60 Minutes" piece on UFC/MMA

Dave Meltzer reported in the latest issue of his newsletter that one of the hold ups in the UFC/HBO deal is over announcers. The UFC want to use their guys, Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg, while HBO want to use announcers not affiliated with Zuffa.

    On the subject of Meltzer...

His latest LA Times piece is up. It's on Randy Couture.

One of the freak shows the Japenese love so much.

Genki Sudo (who weighed 165 lbs for the fight) Vs Eric "Butterbean" Esch (who didn't weigh 165 lbs for the fight) (K-1-Premium 2003 Dynamite) (31st December, 2003.)

Also, Genki Sudo Vs Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto (K-1 – Premium 2005 Dynamite) (December 31st, 2005)

Yamamoto is, arguably, the best p4p MMA fighter in the world.

The fight took place at the Osaka Dome in Osaka, Japan.

Finally, Yamamoto's last fight against Istavan Majoros, who won a gold medal in the 2004 Olympics in Greco-Roman wrestling.

Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto Vs Istavan Majoros (K-1-Premium 2006 Dynamite) (December 31st, 2006)

I wonder how many misspellings and typos were edited out of Meltzer's piece.

I'm so used to him now I barely notice his Meltzer speak, and I always get his meaning. However, for someone unfamiliar with him trying to edit his work must be a nightmare.

    ---

While I'm on my Kid Yamamoto spree...

    49 seconds of fun.

Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto Vs Kazuyuki Miyata (K-1-Hero's 5) (May 3rd, 2006)

    http://www.dailymotion.com/visited/search/Kid%2BYamamoto/video/x3idc_kid-yamamoto-vs-kazuyuki-miyata

Also, Kid Yamamoto Vs Tony Valente. The bout has English commetary. Please, ignore the commetator. Contray to what he says it's not Yamamoto 's pro debut. It's his first fight in K-1 but he is 6-1 going into this fight.

Re: "60 Minutes" piece on UFC/MMA

Last night, at Pride FC's second US show, in Las Vegas Dan "Hollywood" Henderson stopped Wanderlei "The Axe Murderer" Silva to become the first man in history of a major MMA promotion to the champion in two weight classes simultaneously. He now has the Pride 183 lbs belt and the Pride 205 lbs belt.

The preview video for the fight. It's a very good video. Perhaps, one of the best hype packages I've seen.

    http://www.dailymotion.com/visited/search/%22Pride%2B33%22/video/x18jwd_pride-33-the-second-coming

    The final round of Henderson/Silva.

Also, in perhaps the biggest upset in MMA history this happened.

From, Dave Meltzer's round by round coverage...

Literally, that fight might be the biggest sporting upset I've ever seen.

I don't know if I'd go that far, but that was one hell of a card last night. The results did a ton of damage to the notion that Pride is supposedly better than UFC. Diaz was a mid-card welterweight in UFC and he took out Pride's lightweight champ, who seems to be protected in non-title matches a lot, and Trigg is best known for getting run over by St. Pierre and Hughes in UFC and he took out Mizaki. And so much for Liddell vs. Silva after last night.

I have tremendous respect for those guys. As soon as that one punch connected from Henderson, you could see him go down and if he wasn't out from that, the next one right to the face got him worse.

UFC beats boxing, crushes WWE in 2006 PPV revenue

    From MMAWeekly: http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/templates/dailynews.asp?articleid=3520&zoneid=13

Awesome news for MMA fans, the sport can no longer be ignored by the mainstream media.

It can't be ignored? You sure about that? Seems to me mainstream media ignores most other PPV events, and they barely even give lip service to boxing.

I won't criticize the sport or its fans, who are obviously passionate about it, but to say that it should be considered a sport in the mainstream only flies with people who love the sport.

And still, more people (just a guess) watched the Tour of California or PBR on Vs. than watched MMA during last week.

If I were planning a sports section, I would give UFC more coverage than I did WWE now that the PPV numbers are better.

I ignore and never spend money on any of this.

How will this ever get mainstream attention? Get a network-TV contract. When arena football got a network deal, suddenly AP started sending stories on all arena-league games.

Did you previously have WWE coverage in your section? Just wondering.
