In my experience Dave Meltzer is one of the most reliable sources when it comes to MMA.

That's what last night was missing.

    Tito Ortiz.

    Big Papi's 4-foot-3 second cousin.

Yeah, the guy who could crush Big Papi with one hand.

That was not a great indication of MMA either. The UFC doesn't have the crap with the intros take forever. The UFC hypes fighters, but not artificially the way Elite XC and CBS tried to. Guys have to go and earn their hype and work their way up the ranks. There are a collection of big stars in the UFC but new guys are always entering and becoming the next wave. It's no different from any other pro sport in that regard.

A thought for those more well-versed in MMA than I am. I get the idea that if Tito Ortiz signed with EliteXC, he would instantly be the company's best fighter and top draw. Not to be dismissive of Tito's skill set, but if he could come in and be the promotion's champion right off the bat, what does that say about the talent leven in EliteXC?

To my knowledge EliteXC has no one of note at his weight class of 205. EliteXC seems to be going with the name recognition/freakshow route to make a profit as opposed to actually going out there and getting top talent. As it were UFC has almost all the top talent at 205 with the only notable exceptions being Ricardo Arona and current UFC heavyweight champs twin brother Rogerio Nogueira. Tito is probably wise to the fact that he would be lucky to maintain a winning record in that division while remaining in the UFC.

edit: I forgot to mention Vladimir Matyushenko the current IFL champion.

That's my point. Tito walks into EliteXC and beats the hell out of or submits glorified tomato cans right off the bat and becomes the promotion's heavyweight champion. To me, that's an indictment of EliteXC's fighters.

Elite XC isn't legit and isn't going to be. It is/was hoping to draw big ratings, but it's too much sizzle not enough steak. I read somewhere that they are canceling/postponing their next show in July because they don't have the proper talent to fill the card. Can't remember where I saw that so take it with a grain of salt, but I think it was somewhere reputable.

Agreed. EliteXC is not the promotion to pay attention to if you want to see quality fighters. For that stick to UFC, WEC, Dream and Affliction.

It speaks to the state of the sport that the most freakshow of promotions got the first network deal.

Most viewers still just want to see blood and brawling.

According to Meltzer, last night's show did a 2.7 rating. Slice vs. Thompson did a 4.7.
