HAHAHAHAHA, they call up the JV guy and he whups Kimbo?? Good thing ESPN The Magazine already put him on the cover. Kinda like getting the glowing articles about the Detroit Lions out of the way by Labor Day.

    Dammit, I missed it.

In the wake of the yahoo sports article that said "Elite" was dependent on Kimbo Slice performing well, this recap on sherdog.com made me laugh out loud:

Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson vs. Seth Petruzelli
    Round 1
Petruzelli throws two quick teeps looking to keep a rushing Slice away from him. As Kimbo closes in, Petruzelli lands an awkward short right that drops Slice to the mat. As Kimbo makes it to his knees, Petruzelli attacks with a volley of hammerfists, and pushes Kimbo onto his back. Petruzelli doesn't pause with his punches, and continues smashing away with a barrage of right hands until Troy Waugh rescues the prone Slice just 14 seconds into the first round.

    14 seconds?

RIP, "Elite" XC, soon as Carano gets smart and realizes it's not wise to keep getting hit in the face when modeling is much more lucrative.

And Wetzel making this fight more dramatic than it needed to be:

Slice was classy in the ring at the end.
Calling out some props for his fellow Floridian, who had just beaten him.
Still got the after-party going, too, at Akbar

Slice, remember, was just 3-0 as a sanctioned fighter. Sorta new at all this.

All that buildup for 14 seconds? Really?

BYH would kill for that much build up and for 14 seconds of action.

I'm not a big MMA fan, but that was kind of weak.

Such is life in MMA. Some days you get great fights that go three rounds with intense action. Other days you get someone getting caught with a solid right that puts them to sleep.

As far is it being a quick stoppage, the ref actually gave Kimbo a chance to defend himself/recover and he couldn't. I know Kimbo's a tough guy, but nobody would take that many punches to the face without trying to cover up.

Petruzelli was probably the worst draw Kimbo could have gotten on short notice. I think Kimbo would have beaten Shamrock, only because Shamrock is really washed up at this point in his career.

That jab that knocked Kimbo down was a pretty soild shot. And the rest was just a debacle for Kimbo. Kimbo had no problem promoting his after party, but didn't stick around to answer any real questions about the fight, like, uh.....what the fuck happened?

The winner of first fight could be the hardest puncher I've ever seen, at least among MMA fighters. Just nasty. It's amazing the other guy's jaw was still attached to his face.

So...any chance Carano capitalizes on her fame and does Playboy?

Eight or nine years ago, one of the casinos here put on a boxing card and Butterbean made an appearance as a celebrity guest (he wasn't fighting). I was sitting at ringside covering the thing, and he came over and sat next to me for a couple of rounds of one of the awful undercard fights. We made some small talk for a while and he seemed like a really, really nice guy.
That video was painful to watch. Here's hoping he hangs it up soon.

Gus Johnston called Petruzelli’s victory I think, "the most incredible victory in the history of mixed martial arts" or something along those lines. That simply isn't the case

The problem that Elite XC were always going to have with Kimbo is that although he has charisma he’s not even a top 50 heavyweight. Petruzelli might not have a name but he's a real fighter. He's been around. When Kimbo faces guys like that he's always going to have trouble and, in my mind, be the underdog.

Kimbo's thirty-four and I don't see how he can improve to anywhere near the level he'd need to be for a promotion to be built around him. He has ok stand up. The Thompson fight really exposed him though. For me it wasn't just that Thompson took him down and made him look clueless on the ground it's that the fight showed that Kimbo doesn't really have KO power. James Thompson has a china chin. If you have any kind of power and you hit him then he goes to sleep. Brett Rogers knocked him out in the first round. Neil Grove knocked him out in 10 seconds. Aleksander Emelianenko knocked him out in 11 seconds. Butterbean knocked him out in 43 seconds. Kimbo wasn’t able to do that. Thompson was able to take his shots.

When you have a guy who’s thirty-five, has no ground game and no real KO power it’s very hard to see where you can go with him.

In some respects Petruzelli is the worst person Kimbo could have lost to. Brett Rogers, who was a likely Kimbo opponent at one stage, is by no means at elite heavyweight but at least he isn’t a known quantity in the way Petruzelli is. Ken Shamrock might be a shell of a man these days but at least he’s Ken Shamrock. As it stands, Kimbo lost to a guy who the UFC cut. Petruzelli is a real fighter but how far can you really go with him? It’s not like he’s suddenly going to start beating elite level guys. Nor does he have any real mystique about him. He went 0-2 in the UFC light heavyweight division, losing to Matt Hamill and Wilson Gouveia. He was also on the second season of The Ultimate Fighter as a heavyweight losing in the semi finals to Brad Imes. Where he stands in the MMA world is well known

It’s possible that a lot of the people watching the CBS show don’t know much about MMA. Who knows maybe Petruzelli, by beating Kimbo, made himself a star. I doubt it though.

I’ll be very interested to see what the rating is. If the show draws a good rating does that mean that Showtime will buy the promotion? There were rumours that if the rating was good then they would.

On the positive side for Elite XC it was a good show over all. If you’re going to have a show on network TV it’s better to have a show filled with good fights rather than bad ones.

I'm no MMA expert, but that fight looked like a complete sham.

The "karate kick" looked like he got hit with Petruzelli's pinky toe, and while the ref did give Kimbo sufficient time to recover, Petruzelli's blows weren't connecting.

If that's all it takes to KO Kimbo, god forbid he get hit with a shot like the one laid on Chuck Liddell by Rashad Evans last month.
