It's an over 60 thing, you wouldn't understand.

And with that, away goes the sweet feeling of stopping at 1,000.

Buck, I love baseball, but I can also see how it has regressed in the national spotlight.

In the 50s and early 60s what were the most popular sports? What did everyone focus on at the water cooler?
    1. baseball
    2. boxing
    3. college football (maybe horse racing)

Pro football and basketball were far off of the national radar, but baseball was clearly the top. Boxing was not even a close second.

    Today, I would venture

    1. Pro football
    2. College football
    3. Baseball

But the point I want to make is that you could argue for any one of these as the top sport in the nation. In the 50s and early 60s you could not argue against baseball at all. It was clearly #1. Now, it is not clearly #1, so in my mind, that is slipping.

I would contend that, nationally, baseball is as strong as ever.

Not as strong in Pittsburgh, perhaps. Stronger than ever in Boston, not so much in LA, but then there's Anaheim right next door. Are the NFL Giants more popular than the Yankees in NY? In Seattle, the M's and the Seahawks go neck-and-neck, appealing to different fanbases, while the Huskies have dropped a couple of notches.

Sure, the NFL is stronger than it was in the '60's, but I don't see baseball losing market share as a result. Separate markets, to a great extent. And this ceaseless nattering between MLB and and NFL fans just helps sell beer.

I'm a bit late to this thread...

The NFL is the only professional sport that I will watch a regular season game from start to finish if I'm not covering it.

    Good points.

But if I think about Houston, San Diego, Wisconsin, Michigan, Oklahoma, Virginia and all the other regions that are not NYC, Chicago, Boston and St. Louis, I'm thinking it's a toss up.

I just think the following of sports has increased so much that naturally baseball will be stronger, but I think its worth noting that some of the other sports have closed the gap and possibly in one case, passed baseball.

I enjoy the two hours of commercials that come with each game.

    Bingo!

Unfortunately, playoff baseball is only a little better. But you can time the breaks more easily.

One of the charms of high school football is that they go ahead and play the game.

Nope. The games suck. There aren't any good teams--who have the Pats beaten? Dallas? Green Bay?--because the last commissioner murdered any chance that there would be dynastic teams. Every team sucks.

Unlike college football and MLB, the NFL created parity instead of letting it naturally occur.

Parity was created naturally in college football. Scholarship limitations created parity. (and cheating)

Interestingly, Phil Rogers had a piece in the Trib a couple days ago saying that MLB was growing faster than the NFL at this point. The revenue gap has closed considerably with the NFL and that it's only a matter of time before MLB surpasses football. I believe he said MLB would have revenue of $5.6 billion compared to something like $6.3 for the NFL this year.

Shouldn't baseball have more revenue by virtue of so many more games? NFL attendance in 2006 was about 57 million less than what Rogers projects here. At $30/head (baseball price), that's $1.7 billion difference. At $60/head (NFL price), that's $3.4 billion. And my ticket prices might be too conservative.
