And I guess that's what I don't get. How through some feat of hype, marketing, etc, the NFL has become "America's game," supplanting baseball as the most popular sport? How you're some sort of sports-fan hermit if you don't watch on Sundays. At least, that's what all the ads, all the preseason magazines, all the endless analysis shows on ESPN tell us. With much more urgency than any other sport.
I get the one-game-a-week-makes-it-special aspect. I get the gladatorial appeal of it. But every major sport, college and pro, has its unique, appealing qualities. So why is the NFL ascendant?

Because ESPN and the NFL say it is, STL.

The NFL has done a wonderful job of bonding fans to teams and playing those allegiances to the hilt. I might get killed for saying this, but the league seems to appeal to the "common man" more than any other.

While the league's braintrust likes to talk about the complexities of the game, the game is largely supported by the blue-collar bubbas who really don't know shit about the sport (aside from screaming "whooooooooo! Streelers rule!") outside of the fact that they never miss their team's games. I cannot tell you how many die-hard, team-apparel-wearing NFL fans I have talked to who cannot explain even the basics of the NFL outside of their own team ... and even their own team eludes many of them. They just like to drink beer and watch guys get hit. Yeah, I know, I am stereotyping ... badly.

Does anyone watch any sport, start to finish? Hell, if Wedding Crashers is on Starz, I'm watching my 15 minutes worth of my favorite scenes before a playoff game in any sport. Then again, if the Senior Breakfast on 90210 is also on, that's trumping everything.

Unless the Twins were in the World Series, the "Donna Martin Graduates" episode of 90210 trumps all.
