Otis? He gon'. About two dozen zombies feasted on his fat ass. He's not coming back.

I don't think so. They guy looked like he was wearing a suit or dark trench coat. Otis was looking fresh in his overalls.

But that would be a great twist.

The only thing I didn't understand about that scene is ... why wouldn't Shane and Rick have gone over and killed that zombie?

Yes, in a sense it wasn't a threat to them but, I have to think, if you have the chance to take out a zombie, you do it. That zombie could and likely will be a threat to someone, somewhere and could continue spreading the virus to the point that it eventually does threaten Shane and Rick (Be it they run into him again or run into someone's he's bitten). I don't understand why every minute of every waking day for these guys wouldn't be spent hunting for supplies, finding a way to get to a cure or safe place and killing every zombie they can.

I don't think Rick even saw the zombie in the field. Even if he did, I'm not so sure it makes sense to go that far out of their way to go after it. The zombie was pretty far from the car. Rick had just made the point about not wasting bullets, so they would have had to either wait for it or go get it. Every conflict with a zombie has at least some risk. For just one? I don't think it would have been worth the time.

Are we certain it was a zombie?

That was definitely a zombie. It was walking all weird, had disheveled hair and torn clothes, and a pale-ish look to its skin. Pretty sure it was wearing a suit, too.

And it was symbolism in its purest form. The loneliness and emptiness of the world, Shane's isolation, and even something more tangible - the walkers are probably branching out from the big population centers like Atlanta as time progresses.

And it was not Otis. My god that dude was chowed to fuck. He's a pile of bones now. Look at every zombie in the show - it's a person who's been bitten or scratched, probably went home to ride it out in hopes they'd get better, died, then rose. When zombies chow on someone, they do until there's nothing left. Bringing back Otis would be the stupidest fucking thing the writers have done and would absolutely enrage me. The ONLY way that should even be possible is if a minute after Shane left, a living person killed every walker that was chowing on Otis. Even then, he'd be half gone. It's not happening.

That was the AV Club's take, even calling it Shane's "existential" walker or zombie or whatever.

They mentioned on the Talking Dead aftershow that the guy who played the walking zombie was the same guy (a stunt guy, I think) who played another zombie in that episode, although I can't remember which one off the top of my head.

Thanks for playing Dale, here are your parting gifts.

That's what you get for walking in the field alone at night.
