If you were going to kill yourself because of the zombie apocalypse, you wouldn't lock yourself up somewhere to avoid having your body eaten?

Not necessarily true. I'm sure there are other groups of people in the world that have lost people from things like cancer/natural causes in the 10 months since the outbreak (think the old people in the medical center in Season 1 of the show) that have probably seen those folks come back and figured it out.

 

You're right. But I still would think that anyone who killed themselves without destroying their brain would not know they'd be coming back, and those people would inherently lock themselves up in a place where their bodies would be allowed to rest in peace. That seems like human nature.

I'd lock myself up to try to avoid spoilers from anyone whose opinions might be marginally influenced by original source material.

 

There are a fuckload of human beings. That's why we see so many zombies. For every 10 you see wandering, there's probably a few locked up or enclosed somewhere.

Regarding rot - I don't really know how to answer that. Max Brooks touches on it in World War Z. And I wonder how many of the walkers in colder parts of the world were frozen during the winter. It's obviously not gonna happen in the south.
