I'm sorry, but I have never had anything but contempt for Tony Bennett. Listening to him instead of Sinatra is like going to the gas station for coffee. Yeah, I suppose it's the same substance, but wow, it makes you want to kill yourself.

Contempt is pretty strong, Mert... dayum...

    A few thoughts...

    --Thought Blake was pretty good.
--Thought Phil was much better than the judges gave him credit for; don't know how obvious this is on regular TV, but in HD it looks like he's going to drown in noggin sweat.
--Chris was OK, but he still has no range.
--Melinda is the best singer but it wouldn't surprise me if she wins and has a massive flop with her CD. She reminds me of Gladys Knight, who is a great singer who hasn't sold a record in 30 years.
--Add me to the list of those rooting for Jordin.
--Sanjaya... aw, fuck it, let's move on.
--Haley sang well but that was a hideous arrangement. It started well and then went all over the map. And yes, she looked very good.
--Gina was fine and largely forgettable.
--And finally... I thought Lakisha absolutely sucked. It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest to see her go home tomorrow. She's one of the best singers but has strung together some performances that were fair at best. It killed Mandisa last year and it may do it to Lakisha this year. (And if it happens, please -- spare us the "Idol is racist! I'm never watching again!" diatribes. She just hasn't delivered the last three weeks.)

Dude, what show are you watching? LaKisha is the best non-professional singer on that show.

LaKisha is in total cruise control at this point and it would be fascinating (but surprising) to see if this attitude would come back to bite her in the butt and send her home. It would undoubtedly trigger a tear-filled outburst from Paula.

    Go Jordin!

  6. Agree both on supporting Jordan and that LaKisha is coasting. I think she has been doing that since her breakout. I can't remember what song it was, but the one that ended, "You're gonna love MEEEEEE!"
Ever since then, Melinda has consistently kicked her ass, and I've actually liked Jordin and Blake more than her each time as well.

Like I said, she's one of the best singers... but "Stormy Weather" sucked. The Donna Summer song was ok. "Diamonds Are Forever" was mediocre at best and totally skirted the theme. Every year there's at least one really, really good singer that goes out early because she has one or two off-nights. She's had two or three. I think she's extremely vulnerable right now.

Lakisha has the voice, but absolutely zero personality or appeal. She comes off lazy and cocky. At this point, if judged on merit, the competition is a two horse race: Melinda and Jordin. Melinda (29) is clearly the best -- most polished -- singer, but Jordin (17) is also a very talented and enthusiastic vocalist with a better look, and a youthful charisma that is far more marketable.

    The rest are simply subpar.

I guess I'm alone on this one, but I don't think LaKisha has slacked off one bit.

I'll be shocked if she's not in the final three. (My picks: Melinda (who I had from day 1 -- her first audition), Jordin (the underdog and who I'd like to see win) and LaKisha.

The Idol people should thank God for Sanjaya. Without him, no one would be talking about this show, because none of the other contestants can touch that Melinda girl. She's probably the best in the history of the show. I get tired of her astonished act, but damn, she's good.

Jordin and Blake are aight, and without Melinda, that would probably be an interesting race. Sharp dropoff after that to Lakisha, who has real problems singing anything other than a powerful chorus.

Bottom three this week: Lakisha, Haley and Gina.
