I never said it was half the country. It's a chunk.

I do think the "cutie" factor is a big one for Blake, too, no doubt.

Cutie factor figures in for many teen votes...certainly a huge chunk of voters.

And to the mature audience, it's called sex appeal. Jordin has it big-time over the other two female contestants. And take only the black vote, if you relate population percentages to the viewing audience, then that would also split them down the middle, hurting all three black girls to an extent. The same thing happened with Jennifer Hutson. She had two other black girls to compete against, including the winner, when she was voted out.

    Lugs,

Sure there are racists. But I think you're making the mistake of taking anecdotal experiences and over-generalizing. If you want to go the anecdotal route, the O.J. and Barry Bonds polls indicate that blacks are far more likely to give support on racial lines. I'm willing to wager that the cracker vote gets cancelled out by the screw-whitey vote.

Lakisha would probably still be there if she weren't so disagreeable and hard-headed and if her performances hadn't generally regressed as the season progressed.

Why does Jennifer Hudson have to be a race thing? Isn't it just possible that at the point she was on the show (I didn't watch that year, so I can't say ), she didn't have that "it" factor that made people connect with her? And hasn't the Idol vote tended to be a southern thing more than anything? Weren't Hicks, Studdard and Bice from the Birmingham area? Underwood is from Oklahoma, and Clarkson was living in Texas at the time. Seems to me that when people are voting for "one of their own," in Idol, that's more likely to be a geographical thing.

Maybe people in the south tend to take Idol more seriously than they do in other parts of the country.

Lakisha was never going to finish better than third. I would have rather seen Blake gone last night, but I don't think too many people other than Boots thought she was going to win...

This wasn't even as surprising as when Mandisa went home last season.

Going by that, Melinda (Tennessee, right?) ought to make the finals against Pac-10 country.

I thought and still think, of her very highly. I really think she's marketable and will make a lot of money after the exposure she received on the show.

Mandisa, BTW, wipes the floor with La Kisha.

Agreed. Plus, Mandisa was -- well, I suppose still is -- likable.

Perhaps Mandisa and Lakisha should team up for something like this:
