The only one from that show who will have any chance as a pop singer is Jordin. Maybe Blake will make it as a producer and maybe Melinda will have some success with an older audience.

None of the other Idols will have any sort of singing career.

I think Lakisha might end up doing Broadway. I saw Frenchie Davis (Season 1) on B'way in Rent, and she was fantastic-- by far the best vocalist in the cast that night. Several Idol castoffs have ended up on B'way.

    -------------

M.R., Jennifer Hudson definitely had the 'it' factor. It was a huge controversy when she got booted (although Idol maybe had 3/4 the audience it does now, so it didn't resonate as much then).

Here, you be the judge if she had the 'it' factor:

This is from her moviefone.com biography. It gives you a sense of what was going on at the time:

    ----------------------

Unfortunately, the reality is something like what Yawn said. "The 'black vote' was split..."

Look, my problem is when people say they don't like "that kind" of music-- that's why they won't vote for a Lakisha, a Melinda, a Jordin or a Jennifer Hudson. The truth is, those are 4 very different artists, with different styles. The one thing they have in common is the color of their skin. It's unfortunate that some people see it that way.

They might not develop into a long-term success. But you'd be out of touch to think each of the final six won't, at the least, release an album within the next 18 months. Technically, that would be the start of their careers.

Kellie Pickler, Chris Daughtry, Paris Bennett, Elliott Yamin, Mandisa, Bucky Covington and Katherine McPhee all have albums out or on their way out. Of that group, Pickler, Covington, Daughtry and McPhee have received considerable airplay. And that doesn't include that season's winner.

Sure, they might not be around for the long haul, but few are, regardless of how they earned their start.

    OK, Lugs, Jennifer was terrific.

So where does that leave us? Does that still make it a racist plot? If non-whites don't like ``that kind of music'' when they listen to country, does that make them racists? Is it OK for people to like what they like without getting accused of racism? This is the country where McDonald's thrives, where people pay money to see ``Jackass'' the movie. So mass tastes aren't exactly infallible (not even gonna open the can of worms of presidential elections).

There is plenty of general bumbling and incompetence in America in general. I think it does far more harm than good to try to cry racism absent of any strong evidence.

I just don't think that this year has the talent pool or the clearly defined genre choices of last season. You knew that Chris could make a good rock album or that Kellie would do a good country album. I just don't see that type of talent with any of the final 8 or so.

Friend at Idol rehearsal this afternoon said Melinda was terrific, Jordin was fine (playing it safe) and Blake was a little wobbly.

After seeing tonight's episode, I would tend to agree.
