American Idol

Discussion in 'Anything goes' started by Yawn, Feb 7, 2007.

  1. You think the producers are starting to wonder if they should do what Dancing with the Stars does, have the audience vote count for a certain percentage of the vote and the judges worth another percentage?
I think the show might be getting too popular for its own good and could be ready to fall flat on its collective arse.

No, something like this happens every year, at least a couple of times, and the judges are not above saying, "I think America got it wrong." Although, Randy and Paula are more apt to do that.

Here's what happened with Jennifer Hudson, if memory served.

She performed brilliantly, and ALL 3, yes ALL 3, judges thought it was great, including Simon.

Then the results happened, and she got booted. They go to the judges for reaction. Randy and Paula are stunned and say America messed up. Then Simon says something along the lines of, "America knows what it's doing. It's America's show, and it does what it wants."

So that was the deal. But Simon really did like Jennifer Hudson.

Hudson getting booted was a big controversy at the time. People wondered about racism, and frankly, I still wonder about it.

Right, Lugz, cuz race has played into the decisions previously.

One black man won, one black woman won, two white women won and one white guy one.

I see the disparity there. Someone call Jesse Jackson!

    Here's the problem, though.

That season there were some TERRIBLE, I MEAN TERRIBLE white singers. The redhead Jon Stevens. He was in way over his head.

Then there were 3 black women who were sensational. "The 3 Divas."

It was one of those things that wasn't subjective anymore. Stevens couldn't hit the notes and sometimes forgot the words. The Divas did hit the notes and were flawless on the words. It became a matter of science, really.

But there are people in America who won't vote for a black person. Sorry to break it to ya. To expect America to keep 3 black women in the competition became too much to ask. Then it became too much to ask to keep even 2 black women in the competition, as the other Diva was prematurely booted.

    ---------------

Let's take the example of Mr. Lugs relative, God love her.

She doesn't like black people. Sorry -- it's just the way it is. She's never voted for a black person-- in AI or in an election.

What enrages her even more is when a white person sings R&B. That messes with her head. It doesn't fall into the neat little categories in her brain of "how people should act."

Last year, Elliott enraged her to no end. She hated the guy. She literally swore off the show when Chris Daughtry was booted before Elliott. She'd been a HUGE Daughtry fan. He made sense to her.

So she's no longer watching the show, which is probably a good thing, because her head might explode with so many talented black singers this year.

  5. That wasn't really racism, though. That was teen-agers calling and keeping the guy.

But it doesn't explain why Diana Digarmo stuck around over LaToya London.

I'm sure the teenage girl factor is big... Look, I just was saying I "wondered" about racism. Our country doesn't exactly have a great track record on race. I think it's okay to "wonder" about these things...

I think that would be fair. However, it would take the sting out of the show. You can spot talent and there's no question that porno star, who has a pretty mouth, and Sanjay, who has pretty hair, don't belong.

There's a difference between racism and having similar style singers splitting votes... I remember during Season 3, I think it was the week Hudson got voted off, where the bottom 3 were Fantasia, Hudson and Latoya London...

Part of the draw to American Idol is that the voters determine the winners. If Simon, Paula and Randy could change that, it would ruin the show. Would the most-deserving people win? Probably, but it would definitely impact the show's popularity.

Lugnuts -- sounds like I'd love that woman.

I missed AI last night, and thank yall for catching me up. Sounds like I missed Pickler and her new, ahem, assets. Simon must really think she's a naughty minx now, huh?

I can't believe Sanjaya is still there. Every time I see him I want to pin him down and wax those eyebrows...

I don't think Sanjaya can believe he's still there either... It wouldn't surprise me for a second if every person of East Indian descent is calling a zillion times for him because they're thrilled he's made it this far...

It's no worse than every teenage boy voting for the no-talent Antonella...

I don't think it would affect the popularity at all. It won't change how people vote, and they might even try to vote more to cancel out Simon.
