Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart killed in hit-and-run

  1. But there are societies with more barbaric justice systems than we have and a lot less person-on-person crime (China comes to mind). So it can't be that simple.

I definitely don't have the chops at this point when it comes to criminal justice to make an educated argument either way. But I am definitely curious, and I do know that studies have shown - particularly those by something Heckman, Obama's education guru, that early childhood education is by far the best prevention for future crime.

I would argue that more than being a bloodthirsty society, we're an impatient one.

I agree. The only thing less appropriate would be some tool coming on and wanting to know what to do about the hole on his fantasy team ... to which we've all got the proper response already queued up, don't we? :D

    What these two said.

These instances always remind me of a couple colleagues who lost their son in a house fire started when four of his college roommates pulled a prank of setting off fireworks in his bedroom while he was asleep. Not just bottle rockets or sparklers, but roman candles.

He died. Tons of outpouring support from the community and school staff and faculty. Two days later, family issues a statement. "While we are thankful for the unbelievable support of the community, we want to remind you that four other families need your prayers too."

I will always aspire to live up to the standard set forth by that family, and I can only hope to have the faith those parents have.

  5. Wasn't that some sort of huge national story? I seem to remember that, but not the context in which I heard about it ...

you're a little late. Fantasy question was raised a couple pages back.

  7. To reiterate, because I knew - absolutely knew - someone would take it that way, that is not within three zip codes of where I was going with that post.

Guess all the disclaimers in the world don't make a difference, though.

And to shot, buck, bbam or others of the 'non-revenge' bloc, for lack of a better term:

Assuming the DUI assertiuons are true, what do you do with this guy?

Not trying to bait here, just interested in your response.

He's going to end up with a DUI homicide charge on his head.

Oh, dude deserves to go to jail for a long, long time, if true.

But because it's illegal, and that's the law. Revenge has nothing to do with it.

(And, again, don't say it's different if you're involved. I've been there, trust me. It sucks and it's way more difficult to grieve when it's somebody you know/love. But it's not different -- and shouldn't be different, in the eyes of the law.)
