    "They took the BAR?!?!?!?"

The bit after they wrecked Flouder's car when John is trying to cheer him up by
breaking bottles and crushing cans on his head is one of the most endearing things I've ever seen on film, anywhere.

The original SNL crew was not inviolate. Newman was near worthless, and it's hard to judge Morris, given the crappy material he was dealt. But what John did with the Brando/Corleone character (in the group therapy session with Gould),
    or with Beethoven, was otherworldly.

Bluto: "See if you can guess ... what I am now."

Bluto: "I thought you hated Neidermayer's guts."
D-Day: "And what about that horse? Is there anything in the world you hate as much as that horse?"
    (Flounder shaking head.)
    Bluto: "Finish it, Kent."

Otter: "OK, I know, this guy is a total loser, but remember when you guys were freshmen. Boon, you had a face like a pepperoni pizza. And the Stork here, everyone thought the Stork was brain damaged. I myself was so obnoxious, the seniors beat me up once a week. So this guy is a total loser? Well let me tell you the story about another loser ..."
(Hail of beer cans toward Otter.)

Jennings: "It's a way of paying the rent, until I finish my novel."
Pinto: "It must be very good."
Jennings: "Piece of shit ... would anybody like to smoke some pot?"
Later, Pinto: "Can I buy some pot from you???"

Otter, while Bluto gorges himself: "It's OK, just keep your hands and feet away from his mouth."

Old School was good ... but the comedies of the late '70s, early '80s, set the standard -- Animal House, Caddyshack, Blues Brothers, Stripes, Up in Smoke, etc.

I have to agree with anyone that said Napoleon Dynamite was not funny. I saw it on secret stash on Comedy Central one night and after it was over I wondered why all my friends were talking about it.
As far as great recent comedies I have to say I loved 40-Year-Old Virgin, I have seen it probably 10 times and I still laugh at most of the scenes.
The "how I know you're gay" scene still kills me.

    40YOV was all right.

With a little tweaking, could have been great, with a capital G.

    But all right . . . worthwhile.

HATED 40-year-old virgin. Hated it nearly as much as I hated Superbad, which may not ever be possible.

Great call on Up In Smoke. Great fucking movie. I don't know if Cheech & Chng's other movies have aged as well.

It never ceases to amaze me how often that line results in responses other than the proper one.

You're right. And it's a great "Airplane" sequence, no doubt.

But so many of Airplane's laugh lines are standalone wisecracks which don't distinctively play off the quirks of the individual characters.

Meanwhile, AH is spectacular in its sustained playing off the audience's understanding of each character.

It's even funnier than the screenplay I wrote for His Girl Friday.
