Geez. Moddy may be a prick, but he's not malicious. :D

He's not naming names because deals aren't done yet, and he doesn't want to fuck up anyone's situation.

I think a lot of it will be how many papers have fiscal years close to the calendar year, given Moddy's Jan. 1 climax date.

They do say to contact a doctor if an erection lasts longer than four hours. But 2 months? Time to call a shrink.

Garry Howard and Lynn Hoppes are fine fellows, but why would their departures "cause some major ripples"?

Orlando, for example, would almost undoubtedly promote an assistant and not replace the assistant, saving $$$

When Bill Eichenberger left the sports editor's job at Newsday, his assistant moved up and the assistant's job was eliminated or filled from within.

No knock on the people involved, but few papers are conducting national searches these days.

It would appear ESPN is conducting a national search. But for what? They already have a large staff of talented reporters, editors, columnists, etc., just for written material. If they hire a bunch more, where is their work to appear. There's already more on the Web site than most folks read, especially those of us too cheap for Insider.

What to say they don't regionalize their site(s)? Don't see why it couldn't work.

TV-wise, Fox Sports Network has the market cornered on that.

Maybe ESPN is thinking of a way to replicate the model for the Web ...

The goal, I suspect, is to make the magazine and the site must reads.
You do that with talent at every corner. And then more talent.

If I'm the only writer for the Schlubdub Region of Broomball, I have to crank out stuff for every issue. But if MU and I are sharing things, I have more time to work on quality, must-read stuff.

Don't dismiss it. Trust me, don't dismiss it.

Going along that line of thinking, it would seem they could use some more help in the Midwest, and out West.
They've started added small pieces, but I know a lot of people not on the East Coast who rarely go to ESPN.com because they feel the WWL is ignoring them.

They are working toward that and working hard toward that. Using cash as the bait.

    That's a good bait.

I'd also like a true answer (as in, being inside the WWL's decision-makers' brains) as to how much Yahoo's recent's spending played into this or if it was planned for some time.

I'll bet they really just want to expand "Around the Horn" to 20 panelists. :D
