Still can't buy them up here in Canuckistan.

Actually, that's fortunatue; otherwise I'd have to buy HC one for Xmas. Now I'll get her that thermal underwear she's been craving. :)

Most of the stuff that makes iPads so cool is stuff I don't need. I don't need face time or another camera or any of that stuff. I just want a place to watch movies that is better than my iPod touch (which I still really like) and use as a regular kindle...

The only thing I wish it had that it doesn't is expandable storage...

Um ... honey ... it's not THAT far to Buffalo! If you get me one, you won't need thermal underwear to keep you warm this winter, if you know what I mean. ;)

The bowl game here in DC is giving Kindle Fires to participants as part of the gift package.

It's good being in a bowl:

The problem with the $500, which I agree is a ripoff is that that's the price for the crappy one. The people getting the good ones are paying $700-$800.

    No thanks...

I'm also hoping to get one for one for Christmas. Reviews I've read said if you want it to be entertained -- web, movies, music, reading -- it can't be beat for the price. It doesn't have many of the technical aspects of the iPad, but I don't want those. I want to surf the web, maybe stream some TV or movies and things along those lines.

Read a thing today on five things the Kindle Fire doesn't have and to make sure you don't care about those things at all before you get one -- they included no camera, no microphone, it's not an iPad -- not one registered for me so I think I'm OK.

    I'm excited to get one.

Yeah, I see the list of drawbacks vs. the iPad -- no camera, no Bluetooth, etc -- and they don't matter to me at all.

My only real concern was the relatively small screen size. There are some British magazines I like, and it's much, much cheaper to get them for the Kindle instead of having them shipped, but I wasn't sure the screen would be big enough. I checked one out at Best Buy and found it wasn't really a problem at all.

No way I'm paying $300 extra for the bottom-of-the-line iPad just to have a slightly bigger screen.

    Pogue's review was pretty good:

Got mine today. Very happy with it. It fills an important niche in my life: the lying-around, watching-movies-and-reading-books niche. The fact that it doesn't have 3G connectivity is a little troubling, but I have wi-fi at the house and can find hot spots most anywhere in town. The ease of use is nice, and the screen is big enough. Did find out today that Hulu.com doesn't work on it, which kind of sucks. But, all in all, it's a minor setback.

It says the battery life is 7.5 hours. My estimate is that its about half that, if you're surfing the web.

You get some sort of Amazon premium subscription when you start, you can download some movies for free. I believe that turns into a pay subscription in time (at that time, i will cancel)

I believe that battery time is for if the wifi is off, poin. And the subscription becomes $79 a year for Amazon Prime. It includes the movies as well as free two day shipping on Amazon products.

$79 a year for Prime is a deal, especially if you buy a lot from Amazon (free shipping). Plus, that's $6.50/month for the movies and tv shows. If only they opened up ALL their movies and tv shows to Prime members. It's coming....

Apparently, the school my wife works for has more money than it knows what to do with and is giving students and employees new silly iPads (school use only, except when you take it home, where you can use it for anything but porn). That means there's a good chance I'll have the Fire all to myself. PORN PORN PORN!!!!
