Very entertaining episode tonight. I dug everything except the coach's wife with Tyra stuff. Remains good stuff though.

By the way, everyone does know what classic film gave Tyra's mom her big break, right?

Hint: it would have been fitting if Buddy had been late for one of their rendezvous because his car hit a water buffalo.

Does Tombstone count as a classic film? Because that's what I remember her from.

I love this show. I've finally gotten my wife hooked too after she refused to watch for most of the season. The episode about whether or not Julie and Matt were going to have sex was great. The nervous nod Matt gave when Julie was like "I think we should have sex" was priceless.

I assume the whole TMU offer gives Peter Berg a out if the series isn't picked up for another year. That was coach Taylor leaves town, someone else gets named head coach, and life in Dylan goes on. It will be interesting to see, though, if they win the state title or not. I wonder if the series gets picked up for a second season if that will affect the decision on how to end it at all.

My only complaint lately is that it's silly that we don't know a single defensive player on the team. When Dillon's quarterfinal opponent was throwing the Hail Mary last night, and Smash, Riggins, and Saracen were cheering from the sidelines, it would have been nice to know like one guy out on the field. Even if it was a big dumb white defensive lineman, or a linebacker or something. But no worries. This series is aces with me.

I know what you mean, DD. We really only know three actual football players, so it seems like they have to be involved in every significant play, and everyone else is sort of a big dude who occasionally follows either Smash or Street. But that's a minor quibble, as this show isn't really about football anyway.

sadly for us leatherheads, i don't think america was going to latch onto a semi-football show featuring a linebacker or corner or d-lineman. 8)

the show's struggling as it is.

Agreed, and that's why I'd be very interested to see what the show can do in a second season. I think Smash, Riggins, Lila and Street are all seniors, so there's the potential to bring in a whole new group of characters to the forefront (even though we'd still keep in touch with the others), a la The Wire. And I have every bit of confidence this writing staff can pull it off.

People say it's a show about a high-school football team, but it's really so much more than that. The potential for meaningful story lines in the town is limitless.

On a related note, I read a story a week or so ago that the show was threatening to leave the Austin area if it doesn't get more financial incentives to stay. That at least suggests someone's serious about another season.

I think Smash is a junior. But otherwise, you're right, Dedo. It'll be interesting to see how they handle the inevitable-high-school-show-problem of graduation. Then again, I don't see Riggins, at least, getting out of Dillon. Or Tyra. Still, they can and probably should bring in some new characters. I hope they get the chance.

One thing that bothers me about the show is that every character has a personal problem. But I guess they're trying to send a message. I don't mind it, but it does become slightly difficult to fathom that every person in the plot has these father/daughter/spouse/grandma issues.

As for how they adapt to the graduates' departure, I'm inclined to think that at least one of the current players returns next season as a coach. Riggins is the best bet. Other than that, I'm a bit lost as to what they do. Surely, they can't keep bringing in great young actors to start it all over again. Or, maybe they can. Maybe next fall's season begins with the first day of practice and the introduction of a bunch of new faces.

Really, that's a problem for you? To me that's what makes the show so realistic. I guess it might be dramatized, but I think it reflects real life... high school kids do have problems. I'll give you that Riggins situation is pretty far-fetched. But the stuff that Saracen, Tyra and Lyla are dealing with at home all seem legit, and the coach's daughter/family interaction comes across as very authentic.

Just a heads up, they've finally got a new episode tonight. Just started on the east coast.
