Anyone watching Monk series finale?

I'm not a watcher of this show, but I did catch the replay of the last two-parter. My question is, why was Ed Begley Jr. playing the part of the doctor, who was basically a corpse on the floor? Did that character have a bigger part in previous episodes?

 

No, he didn't. That's where poor Ed's career is at, I guess. My parents did see him in the Minneapolis airport two months ago; they were very excited.

I really do miss those USA shows. Entertaining, you didn't need to know "back stories" or look for Easter eggs to enjoy them, or have read the subject matter the shows were based on. Why USA went away from those kind of shows is beyond me. Very streamable - as the popularity of Suits attests.
