Speaking of circ sizes, I've always thought the contest would be fairer if graded by FTEs in the department.
Readership doesn't matter. How many horses you can throw at a project/section matters.
I'd go four classes: 1-4, 5-10, 11-15, 16-above. Maybe 11-19 and 20-above for the final two, but staffs aren't what they were even 5 years ago.

Yeah, and then some bonehead sports editor would lay off a desker or two so he could bump down a class and clean up. "Hey, I'd like to keep you, but I think we can be Triple Crown in Class 2. You can get some boxes from Security."

I think the shrinking circulations are depressing enough, but to classify newspapers by full-timers would be rough. In five years: "And in the 10 and higher group ... hold on, OK, so we'll skip honorable mention there."

For some reason, they've pulled the individual awards off their website for now. Don't know what that means ...

Speaking of skipping honorable mention, what was up with the online awards? 3 HMs? 5 HMs? Did that few enter?
In that case, gotta go Top 5 and HM, no? Make the award mean something.

I thought the same thing. I saw one paper that used to be just under 100K in circulation competing in the under 30K category...

I take zero joy in noting this, but the Tribune's Florida papers (Orlando, South Florida) and the PB Post are not having a typical year.

In a way, this isn't necessarily a major negative for the Tribune papers, unless you're a print reader. They've put a lot of resources into online, admittedly forsaking print to some extent. It's why I only get a Sunday paper right now, and it's by design.

    But still ...
