Last year, with judging in Florida, New York papers won 11 of the section awards (4 top 10, 7 honorable mention).

Quick question and probably a dumb one: If your paper is not in APSE, you can't win any of their awards, right?

I think APSE doesn't mean as much in the New York area. Because the market is more competitive than most places, being better every day and beating people on stories is how they take their props.

At least someone at the paper has to have paid APSE dues.

What my man said. Take special note of this part of Moddy's message: If you've ever won here, then you do award-level work.

Congratulations to all the winners -- especially the first-timers.

Could it also be because many of the NY papers are tabs? At least in NYC. Tougher to make a big splash in a tab format, some people think.

I won't ever use that for an excuse. Doing so would be a subtle admission that you can't present things as well in a tabloid format, and I do not believe that.

I don't believe it either, but I have heard through the years that many at the judging are biased against tabs. What these broadsheet snobs don't realize is that the tab format is going to be the wave of the future. So .... get ready for it design folks - no more 3-foot-high photos - and writers - no more 30-inch stories.

You're wrong about the 30-inch story. Most people are. That's why facing pages are treated like double-trucks.

    Agreed.

But I think it's still okay to feel a little irritated/disappointed when I or some colleagues submitted stuff a particular year that I hoped and felt was worthy, and it ultimately was not.

The great thing about this business, however, is that it provides many more chances to improve oneself. Back to the drawing board.

    You're a class act, Moddy.

    Piotr,
I'm sure it was worthy. I'm sure others would agree. And others wouldn't and, unfortunately, some of those others were in your judging group. Luck of the draw.

I've won awards for things I didn't think were all that good. I've had things that I thought were the best ever done anywhere by anyone and they didn't win jack.

I remember one year our in-house committee could decide between two things I submitted. So it went out and got another and entered that. I went batshit. IF THAT IS WHAT I WANTED TO ENTER *** that kind of rant.

Of course, it won an award!

Be thrilled if you won. It's an honor worth celebrating..
    Keep plugging if you didn't.
