Congrats to Chili Prepper, along with Mark Story and David Poole, two of my faves.

Way to go, RHCP ... and do I hear a second call for Barsuk? Well done, sir.

  4. Once again I'd say the 100-250K columnist field is every bit as strong or stronger than 250K+

In under 40K there are at least two triple winners
Austin Ward, Casper (Wyo.) Star-Tribune (Breaking news, explanatory and project)
Justin Jarrett, Beaufort (S.C.) Gazette (Explanatory, feature and project)

  6. I think Dan Wiederer in Fayetteville placed three times in 40-100. I always remember that name because he wrote a really good column on the APSE a few years ago about keeping the faith, appreciating the job you have now, etc., etc. It was the kind of thing that now would be greeted with a chorus of "Piss offs," but at the time it struck a really good chord, unlike the Lynn Hoppes piece earlier this year. It was really well done.

    Congrats to Barsuk!

  8. I think that the Ann Arbor News is due a serious round of congratulations. They were willing to put their UM academic series into the investigative category against the behemoths of the business, rather than simply going for the sure win in 40-100 projects.

That paper is one of the smallest papers in its own category, and it just went toe-to-toe with industry royalty and won. Amazing job.

I heard they were going to refocus back to coverage of the San Fernando Valley, but I didn't know they changed the name of the paper already.

I actually printed that column out, kept it and have read it several times over the years. If we're thinking about the same piece, it was published on the APSE site in June 2006 and was on his experience at a Poynter Summit. VERY inspirational. Here's a link:

I'm wondering if there are any noted people in the industry willing at no cost and on their own time to critique sections and/or stories. No more I would think than a half hour to an hour if you sent 3-4 stories and a typical section. If anyone has names, PM me with details.

  12. Yeah, that was it. I printed it out, as well, and sent Dan an email telling him how outstanding I thought it was. Kept me going for at least one more day, that's for sure.
