Why are five columns required in a contest as opposed to one gamer? Could a person write one hell of a column that is as worthy of a reward as a gamer?

  2. Because in gamer, feature, etc., etc., you're honoring a single piece of work. In column writing, you're trying to award a body of a writer's work. Most contests I've ever entered are the same way.

It used to be just three columns. Now they increased it to five.

I think Brent Schrotenboer (San Diego) won three times. That's not easy in the big category.

  4. Isn't it actually easier?

  5. Here's a line from it:

"We want to place in every APSE contest category."

    He's getting there!

Perhaps this is a foolish question, but does APSE release the specifics on each story that won? Such as, you know, a link so I could read the actual story?

Congrats to Dave Birkett (Oakland, Mich.) Press and Brian Plasters (Springfield, OH), two of my favorite former co-workers, who, I think, pop in here from time to time. Nice work, fellas!

And congrats to everyone. There's not much to enjoy these days in that biz. Crack a cold one and be proud.

They usually do -- or at least try to, but for some reason or another it takes a while to get copies of the stories posted.

OK, here's my problem. And I don't think mentioning it it a public forum is unfair.

APSE has "embraced" the web by allowing web-only sites to be members and, this year, judging them in writing categories for columns, features, news stories, etc.

The entries went to Fort Worth and were to be judged out of there, which was kind of OK. But here are the "complete" results and ... no web winners. That'll come later, I suppose.

To me, that's "redheaded stepchild" treatment that shouldn't happen if they want websites to participate fully. No offense to redheads or stepchildren intended.

If a separate story moves for the web winners, I'll feel slightly differently, but why even let it come to that? It'd be easier to get the web entries judged on time and send them out with the whole package, I'd think.

I'd feel dumber, but it would be nice to have been alerted in a little more prominent way than that.
