I don't have the exact numbers at hand, but Oher had way more than a few living siblings at the time. Were I to find myself in such a circumstance as the Tuohys did, I would be very concerned about him being preyed upon by those siblings (and those siblings' others) as the NFL money came rolling in. Now maybe it wasn't the right decision ... but I don't think it's indefensible. Lord knows I've been wrestling with "How do I handle this?" with respect to family members' affairs more than I'd care to of late, and while I doubt I've batted 1.000, I'm not much in the mood for any post hoc criticism.

I'm not even sure the assumption of a broken promise isn't an example of rushing to judgement. Who knows how they phrased it, how they and he remember it, etc.? Maybe they didn't realize they'd broken the promise until years later when he concluded they had. And, of course, maybe they're truly horrible people who used the promise of adoption to get him to agree to a conservatorship. I simply don't know.

The reason for the conservatorship comes down to Ole Miss. Because of the Tuohys’ close ties to the school, they were arguably boosters and if Oher chose Ole Miss it would be problematic as he was accepting benefits. The conservatorship put them in a non-arms length/familial situation, removing the problem. Thus he was free to attend Ole Miss without the NCAA getting involved.

Exactly. This was created when he was 18 but was still a high school senior. Clearly he had talent, but there is no such thing as a stone cold lock for pro stardom at that age. Sean Tuohy, former 10th round New Jersey Nets draft pick, would have known that as well as anybody.

I think Tuohys made their share of mistakes here, but it's possible the betrayal Oher feels is because their mishandling of things seems at odds with what were probably some genuinely warm, loving times. And any time you've experienced the best of someone, and then see experience of the worst, it hurts more and feels more personal.

It applies in many more applications in the real world too.

The amount of squabbles/issues people seem to care about that don’t have anything to do with their lives never ceases to amaze.

Conservatorships? Doesn’t involve me at all. I don’t give the slightest fuck.

Here's a closer, more comprehensive look at the conservatorship involving Oher and the Tuoheys, from the New York Times. It's a good, eye-opening read that pretty much confirms it was done in order for Oher to attend Ole Miss (as in, a recruiting sense). He may have actually wanted to go there, as "The Blind Side" portrayed, but he was definitely recruited and a way was made for him to go.

Even given that, and regardless of any other facts or circumstances in the case, or involving the relationships between the parties, it's a conservatorship that absolutely should've been dissolved upon Oher's leaving college.
