Are you smarter than Mrs. B's students?

Fuck you, dickbag, if you know me at all or ever pay attention, GWTW is my favorite movie of all time.

And when I'm watching the movie, and they say something about Sherman's march on Atlanta, I know it then.

Yes, IJAG, I do know that. I hoped you might catch the sarcasm and have a little laugh.
Sorry, should have used the blue font.

Sorry if I don't find your asshole tendencies to be funny.

To quote my pal shockey's favorite line:

    Lighten up Francis

  5. But that's the point, IJAG. If you don't know your history, you don't even know what you don't know -- and are missing out on.

Ignorance is bliss, I suppose in some ways. Are there things I could know? Yes. Are there things I might still learn? Absolutely.

But I don't feel, and I'm not saying this for ANYONE ELSE, just myself...that I'm missing out on anything. Anything I need to know can be learned/looked up.

Let's ease up on the crap-on-IJAG-apade for a minute.

The big question is whether the history lessons were available in her school system. If they weren't, someone in her school district should be fired, castrated and shot at dawn.

If they were and IJAG made a conscious decision not to take them, then good for her.

Hell, I got hauled into the guidance counsellor's office in Grade 11 because they reviewed my senior course selection and I had opted out of all science and math courses. I was told I was closing too many doors for myself.

And everyone always expected me to follow the same path has my elder brothers, who both went onto graduate with honours physics degrees.

I said 'doesn't matter, I'm gonna be a writer.' Mr. Proctor said, 'oh but people your age never know what they want to be and you'll change your mind five times before you even start university.' I said, 'nope, I wanna be a writer.'

I find it appalling that some people have never read a single Shakespearean sonnet or are dumbfounded when I refer to Byron, Cummings or even the classics as recent as Hardy and Dickenson.

Some learning is for some folks, some isn't.

I've heard a lot of talk about Sherman, but does anyone care to discuss the ramifications of his ideological partnership with Mr. Peabody?

There are certainly many people in this country dumber than a bag of hair, but there's also way too many people in this country who think they're a lot smarter than they are. I'm not sure which group is more annoying.

I love history and took plenty of history classes in college, but I couldn't have answered all those questions. Now, if I was in the class I probably could because I would have read the book. What I have realized since college is that I struggle to retain immense amounts of the knowledge I gained.
I know a lot more about sports and literature because that is what I have concentrated on in the last 5 years.

Flash, I'm not crapping on IJAG. She's smarter than she lets on. As you said, if her school district didn't teach basic Civil War knowledge, well, their ignorance is anything but blissful. It's criminal.

What I am doing is pointing out what JD and others have: that there are some things you shouldn't be let out of a school system without knowing. And I'm pointing out that some of my wife's students have no business in a college class.

If that makes me sound like an intellectual snob, well.... I'll plead guilty.

Your Mr. Proctor should have been shot and castrated for trying to steer you in a direction you weren't suited to follow. He's not a counselor. He's a tool.
