Why not go all the way and add Dr Strangelove to list or better yet Soldier Blue.

My list. If you could classify Band of Brothers as a movie rather than a mini series it would certainly rank in right near, or at, the top of the list.

    10. Black Hawk Down
    9. A walk in the sun
    8. The Hunt for Red October
    7. Glory
    6. The Dirty Dozen
    5. The Great Escape
    4. Saving Private Ryan
    3. Tora Tora Tora
    2. Patton
    1. The Longest Day

Catch-22 would have been good, too, but that, nor Dr Strangelove, would ever have gotten any love from Army Times.

Another (admittedly) mini-series that could be applicable is Winds Of War. However, if you stretch past that, the sequel, War and Remembrance, was as WWII as you could get, and neither was as hokey as Tora! Tora! Tora!, although I watch it every time it comes on AND I have the DVD.

I can second the nominations for Winds of War and War and Rememberance, although that's because Rallen13 made me watch both, for which I am now grateful.

Why hasn't anyone made a top-notch movie about the War for Independence or the War of 1812?

I think a War of 1812 movie would actually be pretty good, if it's done right. War of Independence, the last one I believe was that Mel Gibson tripe.

    Have you seen The Patriot?

I think it's because the British made boring villains, personally.

I saw 'The Patriot,' but I didn't like it very much.

It'd confuse too many Americans who didn't know there was such a critter.

Far too many Americans were confused about the history surrounding Last of the Mohicans, too.
