given that so many are talking about the show today, it seems kind of hard to fathom the idea that Joe Buck was destroyed.

I didn't have cable until I was 15 or 16 years old and still saw a ton of baseball.

Bingo. Of course it's wonderful to turn on any game anywhere today, but there's also something to be said for having a longing for something.

Growing up in Atlanta (hi Buck) and having all Braves and Cubs on TV, it was like a window into another world when NBC's Game of the Week on Saturday afternoon was an American League game. And the All-Star game was can't-miss stuff; I loved the intros and all those AL uniforms that I only knew from baseball cards.

Also didn't have ESPN in my house for a long time. When I went to friends' houses, SportsCenter was a huge treat. There was this guy with nicknames for all the baseball players that I thought was really clever.

Now I'm old, Berman sucks, and I know all the AL parks. That's really my life in a nutshell.

I still love the intros to the All-Star Game. Best part about it.

  6. Bubbler,
You could not be more wrong.
I can spit into Wisconsin, Illinois and Iowa from where I live, and fans in all three states are following the Favre drama again, for better or worse.

None of us (journalists) like it. I'd be willing to wager even most of the fans following along don't like it.
But they are following along. To every stupid little nugget that comes out. Intently.

And btw, I know armageddon, and trust me, his opinion is nowhere near uninformed.

And all of these games cost about $30 a month for your cable service back in 1982 or 1983. Let's say my folks took home $1,500 a month back then. That $30 is .02% of their overall paycheck plus another $10 a month to have the newspaper delivered, so now we are up to .027%.

To have this service today that you are speaking about, I need a cable package and high speed internet plus the MLB network. I am not even going to consider the NBA, NFL and NHL packages. I could see a person dropping about $110 a month on the cable and high speed internet. I am eliminating buying a newspaper or trying to watch a game on a PDA or getting my scores on a PDA. And I am not even going to look at an HD or DVR package for my cable.

To ratio $110 to a .027% would mean I would need to take home about $4,000 dollars a month.

I am guessing many of you are devoting over 10% of your paycheck to cable, internet, cell phones and other entertainment packages.

Right now my wife and I devote .05% of what we bring home to these features. It was as high as .07% before we redid our finances on a want/need basis.

So yes, those were better days in my eyes.

A boob like Artie Lange doesn't belong in the same breath with Pryor or Carlin, who were absolute, sheer geniuses. There was some thought and complexity to Pryor and Carlin. Lange spouts profane nonsense. If it hadn't been for a lucky break or two in his life, and latching onto Stern, he'd be working at a Sunoco on the Jersey Turnpike.

If being the type of person Artie Lange seems to be meant someone caught a lucky break or two, count me thrilled to no end to be "unlucky."

Tony Homo....that's gold! Only a comic genius could think of that.

A valid point. There's immensely more options today if you're willing to pay for it, but much of it is stuff people used to see far cheaper or, often times, for free. I thought your original point was absurd, Devil, but you've supported it with some solid reasoning. Now if only you'd do that on the basketball threads.

Lange's book -- with profanity on the back cover -- was prominently on display at the local Borders, where anyone and his young kids could see it. As Howard Stern used to say, he should die of stomach cancer.
