Even in its heyday, Miami went mostly for desk people with 5-10 years' experience. I don't think it was cheapness as much as the fact that a certain energy level was needed to work there. If you're 50, you'd better be a very young 50 or the pace will kill you. I was 29-30 and it was the toughest place I've worked. I still could handle that workload now, but you need to know going in that it's not a place to grow old and enjoy the beach. You need to be frisky.

Boots apparently is an alum. Maybe he wasn't frisky until he got there -- ever consider that? I left Miami much friskier than I arrived.

Frank is right. The pace is hard. But there are a lot of good people there and it's a good place to work. It's not for everyone.

  5. A copy editor hired a year ago, more or less, came in with 20-odd years of Knight Ridder experience.

I read the Herald online. Decent writers, nothing great. But the copy-editing is what strikes me. It's just god-awful. Seems to me that whatever the writer writes gets put up, whatever the flaws. And I see a lot of flaws and just bad writing sometimes. Makes me wonder what the copy editors do there. You shouldn't just process copy. You should work that copy hard. Make it better. Make it great.

Copy editors don't really have the time or luxury most times to "work copy hard and make it great" -- even if you would want them to.

If they can make bad copy mediocre, they've more than earned their pay.

Shameless bump. Nothing new to report here?

Don't know how reliable the source is, but I've recently heard that this position might go unfilled. But that information is third-hand.

Ditto. Apparently, another way of downsizing.

  12. What's it like working there, culture-wise?

Tough place, from what I hear.
