You know ... that may be a wonderful 'congratulations, you just got a raise' present to myself in May or July ...

Exactly. I'd never spend the $ on something trendy, but you get your money's worth on the classics.

The first real 'gift' I ever bought myself was a black Gucci briefcase--not really a briefcase, flat with a zipper, I don't know what you'd call it. Cost $100 in 1985, I could not believe I was spending that much money. I still carry it, all the time, it's still in perfect condition, full of matchbooks and hotel keys and pens and cocktail numbers with crazy notes. Probably cost me less than a dollar per use at this point. My favorite all-time purchase.

Anyone else have an all-time great?

I have nothing of haute couture value ... yet. But I'll throw out there my black patent stilettos from Nine West. Used once and picked up at a small-town consignment boutique for a cool 30 bucks. They are fierce.

Excellent topic. I've been limited by finances, but I'm getting there.

A great investment was a pair of brown Doc Martens with brown trim, not the traditional yellow. They look a little more grown-up and I can get away with wearing them to a lot of places, especially work-related stuff. Plus they're Docs, so they're comfortable and durable.

I recently bought my first Coach bag, which I'm hoping will stay with me for a long time.

I have two Coach bags, about to pick up a third. This one I'll get as a more neutral one, probably brown. I have a pink hobo clip bag and a green leather one. Both I love, both I carry often. Brought the pink one on the road with me this time.

But I'm looking more at something like this as my "congratulations for making it through the most grueling road trip ever" gift.

I don't own anything that I would consider a great purchase like what 21's talking about, but I have promised myself an expensive v-neck, three-quarter sleeved cashmere sweater when I reach my goal weight.

That's what I really meant -- something you just love to own.

I have this little white denim Girbaud skirt I got after I graduated college...it's been in and out of style 18 times, it fit, it didn't fit, it fit. Last summer it was in, and it fit. Wore it everywhere. I think it expires when I turn 50 someday, but for now, it still works.

In that case, a brown leather Nine West bag that I bought in college. It's very small, barely big enough for my wallet, gum, iPod and phone, but it fits perfectly in my laptop bag. It's out of style, but I still carry it for that reason.

I have a Nine West purse good for everyday and a Prada that's a little smaller that I use for 'dress up'. Those are the two things that make me feel girly (for lack of a better word).
