Jogger getting shot does not fit the narrative for most of main stream media. I would venture to say that this story hit critical mass after it was published in The NY Post,
one of the media companies on the other side of the ledger.

When reporters ask questions, and public officials refuse to answer them, isn't that usually reported?

I don't see any evidence that the question was asked. Was it?

If the police refused to answer, why not tell us?

Sometimes I wonder where white people would be in this country without centuries of the black man holding them down.

Dick, it happened. I think it was on the attempted Times Square bombing thread, and I don't remember who said it, but it was said.

Is race a frequent enough motive, then, that it just has to be mentioned in each story, even if only to dismiss it? Kind of like, when writing about a fatal car accident, alcohol and drugs are mentioned as potential contributing factors?

Exactly. That's the narrative the media wants.

African-Americans, Muslims, women, etc. are victims. Stories where they are the aggressors ruin this narrative.

I'm not saying white people are being held down by anyone, but the opposite point of view shouldn't be reflected in the choices of what is news, or in how we report the news.

Hell, I was hoping the shooter's were named O'Leary or McTavish or Smith.

Yeah, I've never understood where that comes from, either.

"Though this nation has proudly thought of itself as an ethnic melting pot, in things racial we have always been and continue to be, in too many ways, essentially a nation of cowards,"

Dick, a random murder begs for speculation regarding motive. Boredom doesn't end all the speculation.

If we know the race of both the victims and the perpetrators, we may at least be able to rule race out as a motive.

And, when they can rule race (or religion) out, the police like to do that. Or, they beg us to look at other possible motives.

(The Times Square bombing was particularly embarrassing in this regard, as Bloomberg and the media implored us to consider anything other than radical Islam as a motive, and the Ft. Hood shooting was similar.)

Why not tell us the facts, and let us ask our own questions?

Why is the media, and even law enforcement, afraid of this?

It's like we might actually discuss race, and we can't have that. Rush and his mouth-breathing listeners will have a field day with this!
