I think someone should cobble together the facts of the story, some 'police' info and some 'witness' info and some 'confession,' hand the jumble to YF in a notebook and ask him to parse the info into a readable, pertinent story in 90 minutes.

Six companies now own about 90 percent of media outlets. I would think that if more companies owned media outlets, then there would be less thoughts about media conspiracies.

But of course, that would mean more of, that dirty word, regulation.

Well, yeah, at that point it had momentum. People started following it. They wanted to see how it turned out. They wanted to see whether he was actually convicted. People were invested.

And, let's not pretend the media is too pure to investigate, or even speculate about, the motive in senseless acts of violence.

There were immediate attempts by some to tie Gabby Giffords shooter to Sarah Palin, and Rush Limbaugh.

Brian Ross of ABC tried to tie the Aurora shooter to the Tea Party.

Multiple outlets suggested that financial problems, or a broken marriage led the Times Square bomber to plant what he thought was a bomb.

The police, and federal law enforcement, are also quick to rule out possible motives, or let us know if they are being checked out, in many instances.

We'll get a statement that there is "no indication" that some incident is "tied to terrorism".

Or, if a gay couple is attacked in Greenwich Village, or African-American is beaten or killed in a white neighborhood, the police will tell us they are investigation the incident as a possible hate crime.

"John Doe, who is black, yesterday burglarized Jane Doe, who is white."

Are you seriously still upset that reporters writing the first-day news lede didn't speculate about a racial motive when one perpetrator was white and another one was 1/2 white?

Yes. "Some" outlets did speculate about the Giffords shooter's motive. I'm not sure how that taints, for example, MC's testimony here about his approach.

I fully confess that group think goes on. Of course it does. But you are really stretching it to an extreme here. First of all, no one has said that the media is too "pure" to speculate about motives. Second of all, you take the most egregious violation you can find - the Giffords story - that was committed by a fraction of reporters, I presume, on 24-hour shout fests, and somehow try to use that to cross-examine the point that most crime reporters try to do a measured job.

Dick, it's about consistency.

It's even about the whole thought process. It's easy for certain members of the media to assume that a "white-Hispanic" would shoot a black teenager for racial reasons. It springs to the top of their mind as a potential motive.

A Democrat politician is shot, or someone shoots up a movie theater? It must be a right winger. Probably listens to Rush Limbaugh.

But, not only do they not wonder if a white guy gunned down for no apparent reason might be the victim of a race based crime -- it just doesn't occur to them -- but they don't want anyone else to speculate about it either.
