I think that's pretty accurate, yes.

The only part I'd quibble over is that the story wasn't really reported on for weeks. It was a short news story in the Orlando Sentinel, then the family had a press conference, and the Sentinel, 11 days after the shooting, wrote a follow-up on it that was pretty straight forward (I posted it earlier on the thread). At that point, if I understand it, activist bloggers and cable news hosts picked up on the story.

I keep comparing it to Steubenville and Gosnell, and I think those are good comps for how it all went down.

Would also compare to the Sherman McCoy case. The Wall Street hedge fund trader who
ran over the black kid in the Bronx after making a wrong turn on way to JFK.

Other example was the Tawanna Brawley case.

But, it's about what stories gain traction, get mainstream, national attention, and how they get there.

The New York Times and Washington Post do not let Breitbart or Limbaugh serve as their assignment editors, but they do outsource that job to Sharpton, and the other hosts on MSNBC.

Getting Blow to write about the story, and then promote it on cable shows, gave the story mainstream credibility. Even if it was in an opinion columnist, it was in the Times.

And, we've read here, and we know others feel the same way, that many are uncomfortable reporting stories, or facts from stories, that will whip racists up into a frenzy. So, stories go unreported, facts are left out.

The media resented the "Ground Zero Mosque" story, and much of the coverage was how whites are "scared" of Muslims.

The media is reluctant to report white on black crime. They tell us Trayvon bough "a can of iced tea". They scrub away uncomfortable details about the mother of a dead 5 month old. They give us poignant stories about 14-year-olds, with multiple gun related arrests.

But, why is it wrong to feed right wing "knuckle draggers", but not irresponsible to play into the fears of of blacks?

Is a "gated community" in the Orlando area really the most unsafe place for young African-American male? Does he face a greater threat from a "white-Hispanic" neighborhood watch commander, or from members of his own community.

If you follow the national media, you would think it's the neighborhood watch commander he should most fear. Him, and the police.

Because the media runs with stories pitched to them by left wing, race baiters, but resents having to report on other stories that catch the public's attention in a manner they can't control.

In fairness, I think one big reason is that, at this point, it's barely news when black people kill each other. Plus, people who read newspapers typically don't live in the areas where such crime takes place.

I think that black people would have as much of an issue as you do about the reluctance to report on black crime. It's because those communities have been marginalized.

This was 5 weeks into the trial! They were dragged, kicking and screaming to this story. They resented the fact that they had to cover it, and their left wing allies were furious at them for reporting it, believing they caved to right wing pressure.

This is not an example of even handed media coverage -- it is just the opposite.

If you follow some of "the national media," nothing has happened in the last week unless it involved Miley Cyrus or Ben Affleck.

Your No. 1 problem is lumping everyone under the same umbrella.

To my knowledge, Dick is the only one who said that, and he is 100 percent, undeniably wrong.

It's not that they're uncomfortable whipping right-wingers into a frenzy. It's that they are uncomfortable with their ability to discuss race within the acceptable sweet spot, language- and content-wise, of discussing race in America. So they avoid it, much like I avoid, say, poker.

The media gets lumped together because the narrative gets written early, by agenda driven media (or activists), and the mainstream media repeats the narrative with little change.

You don't believe this is? Tell me, why did Blow say that Trayvon bought a "can of iced tea"? And, why, without fail, did every media account thereafter repeat it?

Either they are uncomfortable perpetuating a racial stereotype, or they didn't want to change the narrative (or didn't know enough).
