It's an irrelevant deal, but it's arguably illuminating because it shows that reporters weren't ... well, reporting.

This is the first time in the history of the world that each and every death that happens in America doesn't result in its own political movement.

What evidence is there the clerk refused to sell him anything and/or that the next customer bought him anything?

How would the "media" ever know what details are relevant if they don't do their own research, and reporting, and instead just accept the narrative that is "pitched" to them?

John Stossel has talked about how, early in his career, he would run stories pitched to him by consumer advocates. He's now embarrassed by some of his early reporting, because he didn't do his own reporting, and didn't see the other side of these stories, nor how he was being used by activists.

Well, too many members of the media are still being used by the media. They don't question the original narrative, written by PR folks, and run it unchanged.

And, when you get someone like Charles Blow to report it, the rest of the media just relies on him. He, and the New York Times, has credibility. No reason to dig any further.

    It's been civil, and non-political.

But, it probably makes you uncomfortable. Why?

Nobody's being a dick; that's the main reason, I suppose. This has been a fantastic thread. I've read every page.

Do you have a beef with it?

Forget about ideologically driven media for one second, for chrissakes.

Do we know if the iced tea thing was in the police report? I'd have no reason to doubt it if it was.

But, if we're supposed to ignore activists (which we are), do we also need to ignore police (who, gasp, don't tell the truth sometimes)?

Or, do we become good enough reporters to know what is relevant, what needs further verification, and what each case is REALLY about?

Every single mainstream media outlet got this wrong, consistently, for over a year.

And, "right wing" "nut job" sites didn't.

    Why?

Maybe because the "nut jobs" didn't simply accept the media narrative. Maybe the media could learn something from the "nut jobs".

You mean the sites that scrounge and scrounge until they find something, anything, to spin in their favor? No thanks.

Give me any story that has ever happened in the history of the world. I'll bet my life savings I can find something that will make you doubt some aspect of it, no matter how small and irrelevant.

This is the perfect scenario for the left wing activists and their friends in the media.

If they can get their narrative into the New york Times, then they can also discredit any reporting that doesn't come from the mainstream media.

The New York Times has covered the case! Why would be look to some right wing, "nut job" site for reporting.

See how that works. The narrative can't change. It's written in stone once the Charles Blow is successfully pitched the story.

That's both the point, and the problem.
