Is there a WWII vets lobby pitching this story to Charles Blow as we speak? Is someone writing up the narrative now, that will be repeated, unchallenged by the media through his killers' trial(s).

If so, they should say he died clutching his WWII medals. it won;t matter if it's true, it will just get repeated until everyone thinks its true, and by that time, the "mouth breathers" will have called for the death penalty for his killers.

He had 1.5 nanograms of THC in his system. That indicates he had not smoked in the past 24 hours. If he'd smoked an entire blunt by himself, he'd have had more THC in his system.

Also, he was dead 11 minutes or so after he left the store. Given he needed to hollow out the cigar, load the marijuana into it and then smoke it, he couldn't have done all that in couple of minutes while walking, at night, in the rain.

The thing is, the media have actually gotten better about this kind of myth-making.

I wrote a book about baseball in the 1920s. It was amazing how many myths I busted as I went along. Little things, but they just get repeated and re-reported so frequently, nobody knows how they began.

A great example is Jonathan Eig's book on Jackie Robinson's first season. Or Jane Leavy's chapter on Mantle's 565-foot home run where she, gasp, checks the story out.

And, unbelievably, a lot of people were fucking P-I-S-S-E-D that she did so.
