No amount of original reporting experience means anything. If we didn't personally work on this case, we don't know what we're doing and we're easily fooled sheep.

Don't put words in my mouth.

I'm getting push back to my claim that -- in many cases -- a narrative is established early on, and the majority of the media goes with this narrative.

Folks are saying this is impossible, because the media is big and diverse, and does not latch onto some established narrative.

OK. If that's true, where do they get their information from? Do they do their own reporting?

The police report doesn't list Martin as having a cell phone.

I guess he didn't have one then.

I wonder if anyone cooked up a "conspiracy theory" as to why it wasn't mentioned.

I'm going to toot my own horn here.

I was not only one hell of a crime reporter, I was also one hell of a city editor. Meaning I eventually moved on to assigning others crimes and other stories to cover, and told them what information I needed.

I was in charge of every word that got published. Believe me when I tell you I took that very seriously, as did my publisher, who had me under a very powerful microscope. I did this for SIX years.

Not once during the course of this case did I see any glaring inconsistencies or hugely relevant mistakes, except from people who had their own agenda and were allowed to spin it under the constraints of the area of media they worked in.

This is so true and clearly the media now filling that need in abundance:

As we debate the media narrative lets talk about someone else who is caught in the negative media narrative web -- Johnny Manziel. Clearly there are some in the "new"
media who want to tear him down. And as Charles Blow said people believe what they
want to believe.

DD and I are on great terms these days. Lots of mutual respect. I wish he still hung around this place. We basically butted heads over a misunderstanding. We were talking about a criminal case in the news like this one, and I used the phrase, "You might be right" when he corrected me on a finer point. It was just a verbal affectation - I knew he was right. But he thought it was condescending. One has to choose one's words very carefully when e-communicating, because tone can be lost.
