And the thing is, just a couple years later, when a pretty white girl was hit by a truck when she was drunk in the middle of the night on the side of the road after crashing her car, I had no problem writing the, "She sure learned her lesson about being a drunk party girl that night ..." story.

I can recall one beat writer pointing to a story by Alan Schwarz, a numbers guy, in Baseball America and shouting, "Fucking faggot" to lots of laughs from players and media members alike.

And, this is why I don't have to prove a 'conspiracy" and all the howls that there is no conspiracy are pointless.

It's the kind of people that go into journalism. It's the kind of stories journalists like to tell (and PR people know how to pitch).

It's about following the lead of other news organizations who go first, or are bigger. The New York Times is obviously the biggest example.

It's about not wanting to fight the conventional wisdom, because it's not worth it.

And, just because reporters aren't meeting to set an agenda (though, there was JournoList, and we've seen the WH Press Corp huddle up to plan out their strategy), they all get the same talking points sent to them on political stories, and other big stories, where a PR person is involved.

The narrative was written, sold, and published in the NY Times well before these facts came out.

The narrative never changed.

MC, in the case of the 88-year-old WWII vet, the fact that he's a WWII vet has nothing to do with the facts in the case, right?

I think we can all agree to that.

But, it's important to the narrative. It's what makes the story "sexy". It makes it "pop". We empathize with Shorty. We think of the WWII vets we know in our own lives.

Now, if it turned out Shorty lied, and never served in WWII, it wouldn't change the facts. Shorty still wouldn't have deserved to be killed.

But, it sure as hell would change the narrative. Interest would fade. People wouldn't emotionally invest in the case the same way.

And, the same thing would have happened if the Trayvon narrative fell apart. It was important to the case, and had to be protected.
