I know that I bought some of my rock from 88-year-old Trentonians.

This is actually a good example.

The facts came out, but the narrative never changed.

    1. Many of my editors and colleagues at the AP had fairly conservative bents;
    2. Most reporters like nothing better than to break from conventional wisdom, and
    3. Conservative organizations don't have PR people?

YF, you should read Emily Bazelon's recent book on bullying. She basically shreds some of the established narratives in some of the famed high school bullying cases of recent years, particularly the Phoebe Prince story.

The New Yorker's recent story on Steubenville did the same thing with that case.

88 year old shorties that sell rock are bad news.

And now Sharpton has been given a forum by MSNBC that no one is willing to question.

Here's the thing: I don't know if Trayvon Martin was planning to mix a "fire ass lean" cocktail the night he was killed, or if he tried to buy cigars/blunts from the 7-11 clerk.

But, I do know that no one here ever considered it.

A group of journalists, and ravenous consumers of news; a group taught to seek the truth, question authority, and seek a second opinion if your mother tells you she loves you, never questioned a narrative that was packaged and sold to them.

    Why?

Why did no one here know that he never bought a "can of iced tea"? Why had no one ever heard of Ryan Julison?

The media was played in this case, and it was played by folks in the media like Charles Blow, who went on every TV show who would take him to peddle the narrative.

Why isn't there anger? Why don't you feel used?

You let Al Sharpton, Benjamin Crump, and Ryan Julison assume the role of assignment editor and author.

That's wrong, and this isn't the only case where it happens.

On the journalism board, cyclingwriter started a thread expressing his concern regarding editors he's pitched who have just asked him to write an article for publication for them.

Isn't that basically what happened here?

Didn't Blow, and the rest of the media, just put their name on a piece someone else wrote?

Are they as interested and willing ad their liberal counterparts in publishing a narrative that is sold to them, for the purposes of advancing an agenda?

That may be true, but the evidence suggests otherwise.

Sure they do. But most crime victims don't.

The exception might be the "missing blond" whose family often does hire a PR person. And, they get coverage, because the press likes the narrative.

I don't know. Maybe ask Ron Fournier?

There are some lazy people in any industry. The "evidence" suggests nothing of the sort relative to journalism as a whole.

The story was about how things went terribly wrong when an overzealous wannabe cop combined with a terrible law. It was about civil rights and possible racial profiling.

Something else to consider: A lot of the big boys, and in particular I mean the New York Times and even MSNBC, which wants to be above salacious crime stories among the 24-hour news channels, do not particularly enjoy muddying themselves with these types of stories to begin with. The narrative was the only reason they could justify to cover the story to begin with. You lose the narrative, you're just HLN. And the New York Times doesn't want to be HLN.
