Dick, a plausible reading of this post is you believe the NYT knew that Martin had bought watermelon juice yet deliberately continued to refer to iced tea, so as not to dismantle a narrative.

Of course I don't believe that outlets consciously stuck to what we'll call "the iced tea narrative." I have gone on the record, on this thread, about that repeatedly.

What I do mean by that post is that papers like the New York Times only will give coverage to a salacious, local crime story if they can attach issues of larger social significance to them. Here, that included, first, Stand Your Ground, and, second, the race/age component. Big picture, for the NYT, MSNBC and other higher brow entities, this couldn't just be a dispute between neighbors that spun out of control. They couldn't justify the coverage then, and they'd already devoted a significant amount of coverage. They were invested.

I actually remember in the early days of the story gaining legs nationally, it was more of a "damn Southerners" stereotype angle. Of course, I live in the South, which colored my perception.

And that, really, is a lot of what this entire thread is about. We see and hear what we want to hear from the media based on our hopes/wants. It is human nature. We do it for everything. To bring it from race and onto sports. The vast majority of fans believe that the "league" or "media" or "officials" are out to get them. They can bring up years and years of bad calls and unfair rulings as evidence without looking at all the times their team benefited from bad calls and ruling. And if they do admit their team benefited, then they are quick to dismiss it as a fluke...."sure, we got the call, but only because Coach K didn't give the officials a big enough bribe."
