    Really liked Yes and ELP.
Carl Palmer belongs on any list of the world's best drummers.

I read a while back how Jon Anderson was essentially booted from Yes when he was unable to tour one of their last times out due to health problems.

I like Yes and ELP, but the product some of them put out under the Asia moniker didn't do anything for me.

How do you spell pretentious? E-L-P

sorry, I had to say it.

Two random facts about ELP, though, the cover of Brain Salad Surgery was done by H.R. Giger, who later designed the sets and the monster for Alien. You can see the same style in the cover.

Legend claims that Jimi Hendrix was set to join ELP and making the band "HELP" just before he died.

If you were going to shows in the early 70s - as I was - they put on a great one.

I also liked BSS, but couldn't sway Fenian. Maybe another time.

Speaking of Machine Head, Deep Purple was another band I loved in the 70s. They were actually one of the very first shows I ever saw, when I was a junior in high school, right about the time they released that album.

Great story about them: I once did a features story about a classical guitarist, a professor of music at the local university who was born and raised in Croatia. I asked him if he had any influences when he was growing up, and his reply was, "I loved Richie Blackmore. I used to sit up late at night and imitate his playing."

Deep Purple is like Yes in that they also seem to get lost in some discussions. They were laying groundwork for metal.

Actually, I really like BSS as well...probably their last really great original one.

And I'll throw a punk band out there that my wife actually banned me from playing when we dating. Fear.

Don't know if he's hated or not, but I'm also going to cast my lot in with Weird Al Yankovic. It's more than just parodies, which are just brilliant (Confessions Part III and Trapped in the Drive Thru are my favorites from his latest album.) The original stuff is just as good. Party at the Leper Colony, Hardware Store, Virus Alert, That's Your Horoscope for Today... clever, well written... good stuff.

Agreed. Made In Japan is a tremendous live album.

Albert77.....You are bang on with Stand Up and Benefit being outstanding albums. I was told a story by someone who had connections in the music business that the Eagles and Jethro Tull toured in the US together in the early '70s and that the song "Hotel California" is a direct ripoff of the Stand Up classic "We Used To Know".

If you listen closely, it's obvious.

I have met a whole lot of people who hate Audioslave, who I love.

I'm an Audioslave fan, but I still hate the fact that RATM wasn't really ever together during the George W. Bush years.

I also fall into the corner with the Hootie fans here at SportsJournalists.com. Even more embarrassing is this one where I'm sure I stand alone: Sugar Ray.
