    C'mon, Jones.

If you were to write it, it would be consistently overwrought. ;)

(This is no way reflects my actual feelings about Jones' writing. I just am pathologically unable to let a cheap shot slide by. I realize this is a personal failing, but I've decided I can live with it.)

Provided it was THEIR cash, which I'm still skeptical that state money wasn't part of the deal. I'll cease that thinking if I saw the books.

The Jacksons are quite well off, thank you, including the more than $2 million that Barbaro earned them on the racetrack. Mrs. Jackson is also a trustee of the New Bolton Center.

I can't believe the cold-hearted comments on this thread. So what if he was a horse ... I feel as bad about his death as if he were a human. That's what's wrong with the world today - too many uncaring people concerned more with themselves than with others or God's creatures. A pox on all of you here who don't feel an iota of sadness about the death of this beautiful animal!

I hate the horse went down like it did. But let's take your comment to McDonalds. Do you feel sorry for that cow that gave you the burger? That cow went through more hell than Barbaro.

To compare animals to humans is ridiculous.

    Pass the veggie tray, please.

The animal hospital is part of the University of Pennsylvania, which receives no state funding.

Again, humans are animals. Sometimes, there's little to distinguish the two ;)

I've spent my fair shares of days at the race track (hence my user name) and realized many years ago that a thoroughbred in motion is a beautiful thing to watch. If I could spend every 6 a.m. with a hot coffee at the backstretch rail at Santa Anita or Woodbine or Belmont Park or Gulfstream Park, I would.

Is today's news going to ruin my day? No, not at all. But I do not understand how you can watch the first 30 seconds of last year's Preakness and not feel some compassion.

Some day the industry will get its act together and do what's best. Horses shouldn't be running when they're 2 and jockeys shouldn't be forced to weigh 110 pounds in order to earn a living.

Pat Forde expounded on this in his ESPN.com column this afternoon, amongst other things. Very good piece.

Some animals are more pleasant to be around. :-\

And I agree with dooley. It isn't for us to say how/when people should grieve or spend their own money.

    RIP, Barbaro.
