These animals are bred to race. Then they race. End of story.

I'm a horse guy, and hope with all my heart that Barbaro is fine. But I have to point out that I had Barbaro in my office, pool, Barbaro in my golf course pool, and then, at the last minute, put $20 into a pool at the local saloon, winner take all, and picked ... Bernardini...

Speaking of betting money, if Barbaro would have cracked his forehead open when he broke through the starting gate, he would have been scratched and poor ol' Pimlico would have had to refund EVERY cent bet on him. On the plus side, he'd still have a racing career today.

(Don't have a paper in front of me), but I believe ours was:

Main hed: 'Let's hope he lives'
Subhed: Kentucky Derby champ Barbaro sustains 'life-threatening' injury at Preakness

I saw one that read "Bleakness: Barbaro breaks leg"

  6. Best thing about the "About Last Night" hed is that the homer actually happened in the afternoon.

Latest from AP sure paints a depressing scene:

I do not see a good end to this.

Twelve pages on a horse. Amazing.

Oh, sorry. There are animals, and there are people. I reserve my teeth-gnashing and full-blown bleeding-heart emotions for the latter. But feel free to carry on. I'm out.
