That's their job as a news organization.

Anyone else doing it (Aaron, Selig) would be doing it out of courtesy. And it takes a lot of courtesy to put your life on indefinite hold waiting for something to happen.

And that's not even taking into consideration the steroids/bonds-is-an-asshole part of the equation.

If it wasn't for the steroids/bonds-is-an-asshole part of the equation, it would be completely inexcusable for Selig not to be there. He should be there anyway. Either the record counts or it doesn't. This crap about it counts, but Selig is going to try to downplay it is ridiculous.

Aaron is a different story. That would be a lot to ask of him. But I bet he would attend if it was somebody who didn't have the steroids/asshole thing going against him breaking the record.

I seem to remember Bowie Kuhn doing as much when Aaron broke the record. He should've been in Atlanta that night.

I think every pitcher should just intentionally walk the guy every time after he gets number 754. It's not like the rest of the Giants have enough to beat most teams, even if you walk in a run from time to time by doing it.

    Easy to say now.

But what if it had taken Aaron two weeks to finally hit No. 714?

Does anyone here think that Bonds is no longer on any kind of juice? Anyone? Of course we don't know...

But JD is right, no way he will drop out before breaking this record. He has ingested far too much and worked far too hard (yep) and put up with far too much outrage to give it up. It appears to me that being contrary is an energizer for him, and being respectful isn't.

I wish he had been satisfied to be, athletically, Clemente without the plane crash. He was a superb athlete before his juicing began.

Has anyone noticed that Barry Balco is batting .227 with one home run in 28 plate appearances?

No, because it would require me to care about Barry Bonds... now that you told me, I'm sorry he's over the Mendoza line...

Bowie Kuhn would have had more time to enjoy the Gold Club?

That would be the most fitting way for this whole Bonds thing to end. An aging, broken down player -- no longer able to rejuvinate his body with steroids -- ends his career batting .200 and without breaking the home run record.

Hard to see him staying healthy for 161 games without his spinach.

When Maris broke Ruth's single season home run record, didn't he tie it on or before game 154 but he didn't break it until the last game of the season? I don't think the Commish was there at any point.

Hank Aaron is an old bitter forgotten man. Barry don't need Hank. Besides, Hank has zero charisma at least Barry can get people enraged and feeling emotional. Unlike Hank when he broke the record and felt the wrath. Barry is feeing the wrath and giving it back.

New day. I guess Hank would admire Barry more if he kept his head pointed down to the ground and shoulders slumped.
