That was an astute call about Jackie Robinson. Great athlete for the era, but the fact is, his circumstances made him more of a luminary than he normally would have been.

These incidents follow you for the rest of your life. Stiff a waitress or bet on baseball at your own risk.

How many votes will Canseco get? Did the book help his case in any way?

  4. I still can't believe that Ozzie Smith made it in his first year while Trammell received 14 percent.

If only the guy learned how to do a backflip.

See, I think this easily accounts for why Ryno had better range-factor stats. Having seen both of them play many, many times, you'd never convince me that Sandberg was Alomar's equal defensively.

I don't think Pee Wee Reese needs to be calling anybody overrated, whether he put his arm around Jackie in Cincinnati and changed the world or not.

I think the comparison to players in their era works in Sandberg's favor. He was clearly the best second baseman in the game during his prime years, though Whitaker wasn't as far behind as some people think.

Oh, one more thing. I really don't want to hear about some voter saying he won't vote for so-and-so on the first ballot, but he will later.

Boooooooooolshit. If he's not a Hall of Famer to you on the first ballot ... he's not a Hall of Famer. And any unwritten rules about the "importance" of first ballot ... that is just self-important babbling.

  9. Woody Paige is now on record as saying he'll be voting for Dante Bichette. So if Bichette gets a single vote - you know where it came from.

What is the correct word I can use for Woody Paige after this declaration?
