Loved Raines, but my enduring memory of him is doing a special on the Expos where Jim Fanning said drugs ruined the Expos best chance to win a World Series.

BYH, I remember watching that 1987 game on TV. As Raines stepped up in the 10th, my buddy says, "It's destiny. He hits a grand slam." Next pitch: Gone!

    Mr F,

There's a difference between saying that Raines on drugs cost the Spos a WS and drugs cost them a title. There had to be other significant (or potentially significant) guys who went off the rails. Ellis Valentine for one. I'd be inclined to say: Raines on drugs cost them a championship < drugs cost them a championship < Montreal's nightlife ate them up.

Jack Morris.... again, postseason should count greater than regular season.

Taking three franchises to WS titles, plus one of the greatest games ever pitched, in a game 7.... that should be enough.

You pitch in Tiger Stadium long enough, your ERA would take a beating.

No, postseason should not couont greater than regular season.
It is about a career...an entire career.

Alomar should be a lock. Raines should get in as well. I think Dawson is deserving and Parker is close.

I've always thought of Jack Morris as a Hall-of-Famer, but that ERA kills him.

From JoePoz, comparing "Hall of Famer" Jack Morris to ... El Presidente:

And neither belongs in the Hall of Fame

Not necessarily sure the postseason should count for more, but what is indisputable is that Jack Morris was one of the top big-game pitchers of our time and that should absolutely count for something.

It should count, and I was taking it into consideration, and I still think he comes up short. He's not Schilling, who has just as many postseason heroics but a better performance record, which makes up for his late start and seasons lost to injury. I think Morris is closer to a modern-day Livian Hernandez - durable, sucked up tons of innings, good in the postseason - than Schilling.

Whoa now. I'm as big a Morris downer as there is on this board (hi Simon!), but let's not go saying things we can't take back.

Yeah, that's a little strong. Morris is more like Andy Pettitte. Does anyone think Andy Pettitte is a Hall-of-Famer?

Being a big game pitcher certainly counts for something. But Jack Morris would need about five more WS Game 7 wins to make up for his regular season. And I'm a Big Hall guy who almost always says yes.

Career ERA+ of 105 doesn't get it done
