CBS' Danny Knobler reported that the Braves are shopping Jeff Francoeur for a right handed bat -- if anybody wants him.

True, but I think they want a more consistent right-handed bat with more power. Frenchy has been cold and hot the last 2 seasons. He's been hot as of late. The time to move him is now.

  5. Baseball Thread 4 - the Joe Cronin edition

I think Fenian interviewed Cronin his first year as manager of the Red Sox.

The Padres would love to move Jake Peavy but few realize that Brian Giles is actually the highest paid Padre this season. People complain about Peavy turning down a trade to the ChiSox but it should be mentioned that Giles turned down a trade to the Red Sox last season.

I think Giles is all done but there is always some sap GM looking for a name bat. If someone wants to trade for Giles - both Giles and the Padres should jump at it. The Padres because Giles is toast and Giles because he gets a $2 million bonus if traded. That could be the last $2 million Giles ever makes in baseball.

He's been bad the last season and a half, but he was rushed to the big leagues to begin with and they ought to be a little bit more patient with him.

At the beginning of SportsCenter, Peter Gammons made some interesting statements about Mauer. His contract is up after next season, and Gammons said the Twins better get it done beforehand, because the catcher will be the subject of the next great Yankees/Red Sox bidding war -- and the price could top $200 million.

Gammons wouldn't have said it without doing some off-the-record research. It was a good segment.

It's the little things that give me the most pleasure.

  10. Gammons is known for throwing out huge contract numbers.

My guess is no more than 5-years and $100 million for Mauer.

Joe Mauer is 26. I could see him getting a hefty contract for somewhere between five or six years. When all is said and done, Mauer will be somewhere in the top five of highest paid active players in the league.

In today's day and age, you never seen catcher's getting long-term deals, anyway.
