Well, in today's day and age, there's no way Mauer gets a deal for more than five or six years. It's obvious the Red Sox or Yankees probably have the greatest need for a young catcher, and I could easily see the contract approaching the excess of $200 million.

Shit. I never put it together that he meant day and age. I need sleep.
I see it was changed from day in age to day of age and finally to day and age.

Now that he has the expression straight, I'm not sure I understand it. Never have. Day and age? Isn't that a little redundant?

5 or 6 years in excess of $200 is like $40 mill a year.
Guess you're not too good at math, either, Kevin.

Chris is right 5 years, $100 mill ($20 mill per year) is about right

Back about 20 years or so, another native Minnesotan was up for free agency. He was courted by the Yankees, among others.

Rather than take the huge contract, he walked away to remain the first baseman for the Minnesota Twins.

I'm not saying it's a definite, but I could see Joe Mauer doing the same thing Kent Hrbek did.

    A very good parallel, Rosie

It won't matter. By the time Mauer's contract comes up, Minnesota fans will be head-over-heels in love with Brett Favre.

I'm sure those same questions will come up, Rosie. Mauer lives in St. Paul, so he could very well stay in Minnesota.

It'll probably come down to whether he chooses to go to a team that he know will contend for a title and will offer him the most money or if he'd rather stay in his home state.

I think the Mets would be in the market for Mauer as well. Could Santana's presence influence him?

The Mets need another big bat, and given the past between those two, that trade would probably be a good one.

And Minnesota hasn't contended for a title the last however many years?
