Why can't Kevin Gregg get sick?

Thornton has a 2.12 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP this season with 25 strikeouts in 17 innings pitched. He finished the 2008 season with a 2.68 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 55 strikeouts in 56 1/3 innings pitched. A bit of a late bloomer and not somebody I would want to rely on long term, but he has developed into a very good left-handed reliever.

Because the world is a dark, unfair place.

Are they better than the likes of Aceves, Albaladejo, Veras and Brett Fucking Tomko? Yeah, they are. If nothing else they are major league relievers.

Clause in his contract, I think. Or some stipulation that you can only rehab in the minors for so many weeks. That date is the one that's been reported. I don't give a damn whether he throws a pitch for the Red Sox or not, but I'm curious why you're so convinced he won't.

Because he is not healthy. He is done.
I'll never understand why the Red Sox pissed away $5 mill on him

He just threw three scoreless innings in his recent outing.

Some of the whacker-offers in Red Sox Nation think they're going to get Victor Martinez.

What, they think the Indians are going to trade him for Smoltz? :)

Smoltz threw in A-ball last week, Pitches for AA Portland tonight... 3 innings, max of 50 pitches.

We'll see how healthy he is when (if) he gets to Triple A and 90-100 pitches.

It will be interesting to see what the Indians will do. If the Red Sox trade the Bard kid -- whom a few scouts are saying is a radar gun guy and not a whole lot more -- the usual Boston Baked Bile (served fresh for over 350 years) will be coming.

I don't care for American League baseball, but I hope Smoltz comes back healthy and productive.

It should have worked out for him to retire a Brave, but I'm holding out hope we'll get to see more from one of this generation's best pitchers (and a guy who gave me tons of time and candor in the middle of the season several summers ago, when I was a pup reporter working on a multi-part takeout project ... that project really helped my career).

I may be going to that game tonight as he is pitching in New Hampshire. I'd be interested to see what the Sox do with him pending his outing.
